Any of the other classic car owners here have to get their charger emmission tested next year? I hear they're getting rid of the 20 year exempt rule...

Although my car is registered it's status is still - UNFIT.  I will not be putting it on the road until the spring.  I will cross that bridge when I get there.  I am sure that you could find someone who will pass it for a nominal fee.

On the other hand, I have heard that ON will be getting rid of the Drive Clean program altogether.  :shruggy:

A friend of mine contacted them and the letter he received from them indicated that vehicles built prior to 1988 would not be affected.

For sure? Cause my dad was getting new tickets for his car and my charger is registered under his name right now for insurance purposes and when they saw it they told him he should get the two yeear ticket now to avoid it....

Not something I need to worry about yet (see pic), but I've heard both stories too.

The most recent was the removal of the 20 exemption though.

From the driveclean site:

"Effective January 1, 2006, the program is being revised to focus on vehicles most likely to pollute by:

Starting emissions tests to renew licence plates when vehicles are five years old, instead of three, because newer vehicles have much better emissions controls and three-year-old cars pass Drive Clean over 99 per cent of the time. Heavy-duty trucks and buses will also require tests beginning when they are five years old, instead of three

Strengthening consumer protection and fraud prevention by making it an offence under the Environmental Protection Act to create, distribute or use false Drive Clean passes and making it easier to decertify emissions inspectors who create, distribute or use false Drive Clean passes

As well, 20-year-old light-duty vehicles, which have a high risk of being serious polluters, will now require testing, with 1988 and newer model year vehicles staying in the program. "

Typical government speak: 20 years old or 20 years old and older? And by the way, 20 years old would go back to 1986 not 1988..
It's just confusing. I think it's on purpose.

Anyway, we can write our concerns down and send them in:
"Both Drive Clean’s new and proposed changes have been posted on the Environmental Bill of Rights Registry to provide interested parties with the opportunity to review the changes as a whole and provide comments. The posting can be viewed for 60 days at http://www.ene.gov.on.ca/envregistry/026516ep.htm "

Ah! Now it is clear.

"20 year old rolling exemption of light duty vehicles eliminated. Testing of model years 1988 and newer (effective January 1, 2006; will be implemented January 1, 2009);"

We're fine. What's happening is that they are taking out the 20 year ROLLING exemption and just going after anything that is AS OLD AS a 1988 car or newer, but not older.
The key is that the exemption year is not going to change now. It's going to stay 1988.

If I didn't know better, I'd think that someone actually thought about how many classic cars are out there, how much they really get driven, and realized how little of an impact on pollution they represent as a total. If it weren't the government, I'd say that's exactly what happened. Could there be hope?

well that atleast makes sense to me. Theirs no reason why an 88 shouldnt be able to meet the standards it had in 88..
