i scored a long block 440 yesterday for 100 bucks.  power steering is in good shape, all the brackets and pulleys are there!  how do i determine what heads are on this motor?  i took the valve covers off and found some numbers, but i have nothing to cross reference them with.  and on the front of the block, near the distributor, there is a little square piece that says T440, what does the T mean?

You need to look at the pad on the slightly on the drivers side top infront of the intake. 1 inch or so by 3 inches  That is where the dates and year code are.

As far as I know you need to take the valve cover off to see the # of the heads

What we need to know is the last 3 numbers off the heads.

Correct,  Forgot to add that.

The "T" stands for Trenton Engine Plant, according to Galen's book, found on 400 and 440 engines built from 1974-78.   There should be the number 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8 in front of the "T".

The 1978 Police 440 in the garage has 8T440 stamped on the pad up top by the distributor.

In all likelyhood, if you look past (not before) the 440 stamp on the pad and you should find an "E", meaning engine will have a cast crank.  If so, a cast crank is externally balanced, meaning a correctly weighted torque converter will be needed.

there is a 7 in front of the t and i didn't see an E.  i'm gonna have to go back to storage and take another look at the heads and write down all the numbers i see and let you guys take a look.  what are the chances of this thing having decent heads,  prolly not 906's, but is there another set that are good that they would put on that motor?

A 1977 engine would have 452's from the factory, fully hardened exhaust seats, arguably the best factory head to have.

Indy Cylinder Head charges a $100 premium for 452s and 906s, if you buy a set of modified factory heads from them.

:iagree: The 452 casting responds very well to minor porting and bowl work. The hardened seats are a bonus for unleaded fuel.
