Need some help with idle adjustment

I have a 383 stroked out to a 496. When I am driving the car and come to a stop, the engine idles at 1200-1500 RPM. If I lift the clutch a little and put a load on the engine and bring the rpm down to 500-800 and depress the clutch, the rpm's will stay at 800 rpm's. What do I need to do to make the idle drop to 800 without doing this. I don't want to wear the clutch out. Any Suggestions?

I have a AED 950 HO series carb. Mechanical secondaries.

sound liek an idle circuit adjustment. shoudl be fairly simple or it could turn into re-jetting the carb.  let it idle high and with the air cleaner removed cup your hand over the intake. see if the lack of air will bog it down the the lower idle like letting the clutch out some did.  you can try adjusting the idle circuit with a vacum gauge attached to the carb.

I agree with Joe.....the idle circuit needs some adjusting. That carb will have a 4 corner idle circuit so try using a vacuum guage and start with 1.5 turns out as your baseline on the idle mixture screws. Adjust for maximum vacuum then reset the idle speed to the desired rpm.  :yesnod:

had this problem with a big Demon carb....     not a fun task for sure....     idle circuit adjustment cured that issue - see above

I had a little time today to monkey with this. I did not have a vacuum gauge, so I just checked what the screws were at to start. They were all set at about 1 1/4 turns. I went to 1 turn and found it to be better. I took it for a drive and the idle stayed more consistent. I think I am on the right track now. I just need to get a vacuum gauge to get it better. Thanks again for all the help. :2thumbs:

It was fun taking it for a drive today. The first time I have driven the car in about 2 weeks. Almost forgot how fun that motor is. :drive:     :D
