James Hylton Charger @ Talladega

I was very interested in the Charger that was in Talladega.  The car had a decal with James Hylton's name on it, other than that, much was left to your imagination.  The car had '68 quarters, a '70 front clip, and a '71 rear body panel with bumper.  Does anyone know the story behind this car?  It kinda of looked like a Nichels built car but it was hard to tell.  Please someone, shed a little light on the story of this car and it's history.

James Hylton did drive a 68 Charger cant say this car is that one or not.This one looks beat up a bit..Reminds me of a Ernie Derr charger

Well the car did have some signs of yellow paint here and there.  The car looked like it was recently drug out of a ditch.  I would be really interested in hearing the story of how this car was discovered.  I'm sure someone knows something about it.

Talked to Rossi quite a bit... He definitely seems to think this is a legit car and with his background, I would tend to believe him.. I hope he can get his Dad's former '71 Daytona 500 Charger Daytona back.. He knows where it is....

I heard, but did not verify, that the rusty shell was the car that Tallmadge Prince was killed in, and was rebuilt shortly thereafter.

Bill Rossi believes it is one of James Hylton's cars by what James has told him after looking at it.   It is possibly the car (repaired) that Tab Prince was killed in at Daytona in 1970.   I think James had a couple of Chargers during this period as they were for sale in Autoweek at the end of the '69 season.

Bill Rossi believes it is one of James Hylton's cars by what James has told him after looking at it.   It is possibly the car (repaired) that Tab Prince was killed in at Daytona in 1970.   

I think James had a couple of Chargers during this period as they were for sale in Autoweek at the end of the '69 season..

Ive collected all 69-70 Autoweek that be a retro ad to look up for the sale of that unique car.Do you know what issue the ad might be in

This is interesting.  Here are a few picture of the inside on the driver side, where it would have been hit. 

First picture is of the front side of the of the driver's rear wheelwell.



The next picture is inside the driver's door and looking towards the back.



The next picture in inside the driver's door and looking towards the front.



This next picture shows signs of the original roll bar being replaced.  If you look at the vertical bar that in place of the hinge pillar, you can see a welded seam.  This is right above the horizontal bars inside the door.  Originally, this should have been one solid bar that starts above the driver's head and continues as one piece all the way to the floor.  It appears a section of the roll cage was replaced at one time.... which means it very easily could possibly have been Prince's car.

I wanted to try to shed some light on the Hylton car. I was told of the car by Cotton Owens. He knew I was looking to do my dads car. He said it was the correct car for the time. All parts on the car were legit. So I went to see James and took him to look at the car. He noticed the yellow paint all on the right side of the car. After further looking at the car he said beyond a shadow of a doubt this was his Daytona. There is a bar that was added on the passenger side to keep the cross rail and hump from cracking. He said the twist on the car caused this to happen. So he said he added the bar that would help keep that form happening. Also after we removed the drives door and the passenger door you could see the drivers side had all new roll bars. The passenger side has old rusted and dented bars. There are also a couple of bars missing that would have been on the drivers side.
I have been looking for numbers but I have not found any as of yet. I also asked about James and Nichels car and he said he had one at one time. So I hope this clears it up a little.

Dave, look at the end of the 1969 issues.   The ad starts with "Hylton Racing Dodges" or something to that effect.   James sold his Mopar stuff and switched to Ford for 1970.    If it is not in the Autoweeks, it will be in the National Speed Sport News issues.

I looked in the Dec 27 69 Autoweek end of 69 season And found that James Hyltons car was rear ended by Buddy Baker in the pits at the Texas 500.Hyltons car was able to continue racing

Ask Cotton Owens about that race... He is still steamed at Baker about that wreck based on what he told us at MMW a few years back.

He said he was so mad they took the car back to the shop and cut it up into pieces.

Its Y 2 the known dealer installed 6 pack car of Gary Forbus Fl Prior to him Was James Outler Warner Robbins Ga.Also the car was used in musclecar review back wing to wing with Petty blue superbird of Bill Schindell Fl

Here are a few pictures from inside the trunk compartment.  With the rear body panel being replaced with a '71-up piece, it's hard to tell what damage was done to the rear. 






Here is a picture of the inside of the passenger side door.  As mentioned earlier, it appears this part of the cage is weathered more than the driver side.
