Bought a new master cylinder for the 69.  I live by the coast and everything here starts to rust over time.  How to I keep the master cylinder or new steering box looking new-ish?  Is there a cast iron clear coat or maybe of petroleum-based protectant?

It seems that cast iron master cylinders rust no mater what in my experience. I think brake fluid attracts moisture.
My son has a 76 Scamp, we replaced the master cylinder about three years. I just spray bombed it with some cheap rattle can clear. It still has the gray iron appearance, no rust.

But I did the brakes on the Charger and did not spray the master cylinder with clear. It has scale rust on it.

This sounds like it's the stuff!  I'll check around my local marine retailers to see if they got it in stock.  Thank you!

If it is a cast iron steering box it is power steering - which means it should be painted black.

Well shoot, I think on the Scamp we filled up the master cylinder and bled it one time, never got fluid on the outside of it and never messed with it again.

If brake fluid gets on cheap paint, it will eventually eat through it. Not sure, but I'm guessing the factory paint on our cars had a hardener in it, witch for the most part would have saved the driver side inner fender and firewall from spill over.

Brake fluid will eat away any paint that's why if you every look any new car service manual it will constantly remind you about how it will eat away any paint. And if you do get it anywhere you need to wipe it off immediately with water. Brake fluid is hygroscopic which means it will absorb water which will probably cause the rusting the rusting issue on the outside of the master cylinder.
