keep in mind the wider the front track theres a tendacy the fronts will groove and tend to pull into the ruts in the road. so even though its super cool to stuff the fenders too fat is no good.

maybe some dudes dont drive there cars in order to determine that

 i won't go wider than a 245 15 on these old b body's in the front . i had 255's  in the front of the 68 charger and i didn't like them . :Twocents:

Front; 235/60x15, 15x8 4.25 back space  Rear; 275/60x15, 15x10 5.0 back space. Billet Magnum wheels

Same front, this rear set is 295/65x15 BFG drag radial on 15x8 4.5 back space. Rear is Cragar Dragstar

Nice look and stance you have got there HPP. What kind of tires (brand) are you running on the:"Front; 235/60x15, 15x8 4.25 back space  Rear; 275/60x15, 15x10 5.0 back space. Billet Magnum wheels."
And would you be able to run 15x8 with 4.5 back space up front, and 15x10 with 5.5 back space in the back?
And if you don't mind me asking, how much room clearance do you have on each side of your rear tire??
Thanks.

I had my original Cragar S/S 14s powder coated and now I'm looking for tires. I found 14" tires on Summit for a decent price but I'm not really sure what size tires to put on the rims. My father gave me the car with 5 wheels, 2- 14 X 8 and 3- 14 X 7. I am looking to put some BFG T/A 245/60R14 on the rears and BFG 225/70R14 on the front. I'm using these wheels primarily for the resto but I do plan on burning up the rears the first chance I get. If anybody can suggest a better place to find 14" tires or a recommendation on tire size it would help.

Thanks, DRE.

These are just some low cost Grand Am radial GT tires. Yes, you could run 4.5 backspace up front with that tire. In my experience, the max backspace you can run on the front with a 15" wheel is 4.75. With a 235 tires, this barely clears the control arm and ball joints.

Out back a 5.5" backspace would work as well. With the current set up it is a couple of inches to both side of the spring and almost that much to the fender lip. Changing to a 295 tire may reduce that space 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch per side though.

Why didn't you like them, specifically?  Stock tires on my '99 T/A are 275 up front and I don't like them either, they really shouldn't be any wider than 245.  Hell even a comparable year 'Vette only runs 245's.  When the new wheels and tires for the Charger come up I'd like to keep them 245 up front and maybe 275 in the back.  Do the wheels have to be different widths to accomodate this, like an 8" versus a 9"?

The rims are V-48's from Wheel Vintiques. Tires are Kumhos  :eek2:  245 45 17 and 275 40 17. I'll probably run the Nitto 555r on some 18" for the Charger, they make 275 50's and 305 50's.

Any idea if the BFG 295/50/15's will fit on an 8.5 wheel?

I have 295 50 15s on 8.5 rears. Not BFG but I wouldnt have thought that would make a difference.
Gotta love a '69

I didn't see it discussed, but what is a good set up for all four 15" Magnum 500s being the same size? What tire size and what backspacing, considering the wheels would be the same front and rear?

I bought the car with 295-50/15 on the rear and 205/65-15 on the front. The tires are old and the wheels are pitted, with some rust breaking through the chrome on the left rear wheel, so I'm leaning toward getting a new set of 500s. The rear wheels have two 1/4" spacers on each side, but even with those, the raised white letters, which are mounted toward the inside, have been nearly wiped off by the inner wheel well. I guess the offset is stamped on the inside the rim, so you can't see it with the tires mounted? That's convenient.  ::)

The fronts seem too skinny, but maybe that's just in comparison to the wide ones in the rear. I don't feel the need to fill the rear wheel wells, and I'd be happy with something just slightly larger than the stock 14" size in a 15" set of wheels.

That depends entirely on the look you want.  To have the same size on each corner I think 15x7 with 255's looks pretty good.

Wow, Slim Pickens in that size. I'm surprised at how few tires are available. Thanks for the input.

I've only looked at BFG, Mickey Thompson and Cooper Cobra's and they all have the 225/60 15 with rwl.  If you go bigger then you might have issues up front, I'm not sure what the biggest tire is that'll fit the front.  If you go smaller to let's say a 245 then I would use more backspace on the rear rims to push the tire closer to the outside to at least give the illusion that those massive wheelwells are a bit more filled.

I've just ordered some Nitto 450s - 275/50/17 for out back, and 255/50/17 for the front. They will be on Torq Thrust originals. I *had* Fuzion ZRI 255/50/17s all around, but, in shipping the car, the back 2 were damaged without having ever driven it :| Anyhow, looking forward to the new setup, and having a slightly beefier tire out back. Probably going to white the letters on them too. The 450s have some good block lettering that will support that nicely. I just need old school white letters on my 70's car. :)

Got hold of Cragar's Customer service and you can special order custom backspace. $25-35 per wheel and takes 3 weeks

Musicman

I ordered my Cragars custom spaced through Summit. It was Cragar that told me to go through them, but that was a few years ago. :shruggy:
It was only like $12 a rim at the time, but again that was a few years back.

Here is a 68 with 10" Cragar SS wheels and 4.25" of backspacing - which is what I think they come with.  So it seems it can be done.  I don't know if it has Super Stock springs.  The car belonged to VegasMike but it has since been sold to a new owner who is also a member:

Hi guys,im new at the Chargerforum! looks like a great forum with lots of knowledge. Great thread and info!, but retarded as i am ( maybe cause im from Sweden...) i still have a question about clearance for my 69 charger. im thinking of mountuing a set of billet specialties street lite (black) with hoosier quick time d.o.t.
but what sizes do i need?  as i live in sweden im pretty darn worried about order the wrong wheels from USA,  hop to get it right the first time if you know what i mean, anyway, im thinking in the back -

Billet Specialties street lite (black)15x10" with 4,5" backspace.  tires = Hoosier 295/60-15  (can`t find 5"bs on summit)

Front ? i have no idea.....please help. i`ve seen Hoosier  245 /60-15 on summit, maybe that will work in the front? but i dont know what kind of backspace and width i would need for the front?

Im about to order this stuff, so i would be more than happy i anyone would help me with this questions as soon as possible :popcrn:
