Yes. It has an 18 spline input shaft instead of a 23 spline A833 4 spd....Most high performance 440 4 spds came with them.

Sort of, Hemis and 440's used an 18 spline input, while others used a 23 spline input.

They are both A833 transmissions....the clutch would be the only thing that would need to change.

My '68 has a numbers-matching 23 spline trans behind the 440.

Really?

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

The engine and transmission serial numbers have the same last 6 digits, IIRC. I'm not where I can look to be certain how far up they match, or even remember how many numbers are on them. I was disappointed the first time I ordered a clutch disc.
The shop will probably dig the assembly out from under the stairs for me and check, if this is something so unusual it's noteworthy.

Could the trans have been rebuilt or repaired, and a 23 spline input shaft installed?

When was the build date? I recollect reading somewhere that the early '68 Charger R/T 440's got the 23-spline A-833 as standard equipment. I will try to find that reference.

That's what I was  just thinking - easier to find 23 spline guts were used for an earlier repair.

Would that mean a '67 GTX or R/T would have a 23 spline too?

Well fellas,

The original R/T body died a miserable rusty death in about 1985, so I have no way to know the build date-that is, until I find the fender tag which is somewhere in my mother's house (which could be on the Hoarders TV show). Would the fender tag show the build date? I thought the Hemi trans had a different diameter front bearing housing as well...

The Chrysler factory parts books and svc manuals ( I have them all ) from 66 through 69 list the 18 spline input shaft only for 426/440.No 23 spline.
