Radio faceplate questions

Does the same faceplate fit all thumbwheel radios, regardless of whether they are AM only, AM/FM, or AM/8-track?

Does anyone repop them?

The 8 track face plate is different then the AM radio faceplate. The bottom of the 8 track is a large rectangular opening for the 8 track tape.

When buying a radio, you also have to make sure the AM radio is from a B body and not a C body car.

BE&A re-pops both types as well as a radio delete face plate.

There's also a faceplate with a hole on the right side of it for a fader switch (68 only) but those can be made by modifying a regular plate. Also, all three 2nd gens have different textures and there's a woodgrain plate too for 69-70 SEs I believe. The 68 has verticle grooves and the basic 69-70 have a sort of wrinkle finish.

I've yet to find a repro faceplate in woodgrain for a 69... Maybe i'm not looking the right place?

Or are you simply supposed to purchase a black repro and get the wood grain overlay for it?

This is EXACTLY the setup i'm trying to achieve!

You mean besides BE&A, right?  :D

Unfortunately it appears that BE&A doesn't sell the radio plate by itself in woodgrain, but then I doubt they would or could when you consider trying to match the shade and pattern to an old one.

Ex President

Thanks for the links! I guess I'll just have to use a black one... Won't look too awful I don't think, better than the huge hole that's there right now.

I'm assuming these are of good quality, fit/finish?

BE&A obviously has them. Why dont you call them and try to sweet talk just the radio section from them. Or find out who makes them for BE&A, and maybe you can get one through them.

I would think a wood grain would match better than a black one, even if the color is off. You could always alter it with some type of transparent stain or something.

Ex President

I guess I really didn't think of trying to "sweet talk" just a radio plate from them.

I've been seriously contemplating just selling my current bezel setup and buying the new 3 piece one that I need so that I could be done with it.

What would a good, wood grain, driver quality bezel setup, "missing the radio plate obviously" bring on the market I wonder?

These days around $50, including the plastic backs.

I thought Year One was selling the DIN type radio faceplate now? I know I saw it (the black one) for 70 Charger. Plus I thought someone had decals for renewing the wood-grain on dash and console. Sorry I don't remember who.  :scratchchin:

Ex President

Yea... I've looked at it from several different perspectives.

It's looking like just getting a NEW 3 piece, "mine's an A/C car" bezel kit from BEA will be my best option. I don't mind spending a bit extra on it as long as the fit and finish are what I'm looking for.

Yea... They can be had in Black for $300 though... Almost reasonable.  ::)

It's got to be pretty all new!  :2thumbs:

It's only money. :P If I only had to spend another $500 on my Charger I'd be happier than a fat chick at a Bon-Bon convention.

With a new job only 2 miles away at the V.A. my Charger should start shaping up next year! I heard some of the re-pop dashes had issues with the grain pattern (69-70) not matching.

Ex President

I'll prolly end up just putting a black one in it anyways...   :yesnod:

I like them both but for the money black is nice. After having Triumph TR's and Spitfires with real wood dashes I'm spoiled.
