Looks like an add-on piece...bet there was an add-on air conditioner under the dash at one time...dealers & AC places would cut the front of the console for the under dash evaporator. See pic below of what was probably there

So the console is one piece all the way up?

Can someone post a pic of this area from a correct 69?

Console it one part, the top plate screws to it as well as the door and back.

It is a one piece plastic,  sorry I dont hae pics..

Here is a pic from Per's car.....its a 68, same console, just different top plates.

If you notice, mine looks cmpletely different.

Wonder if its out of something else?

The reason yours looks different is because it looks like someone has tried to complete the front of the console with a piece of metal. Does that piece come off? Your console should look like the picture posted by jaak
