Has anyone recently priced current Charger drivetrains...?

A friend told me another of his buddies got a 5.7 for 2K from a totalled 2008 Charger.

I wonder what they are running with the transmission.

I saw a 70 Challenger at the drag strip with a new 6.1 with the transmission.

Did not ask how hard it was to swap into the car.  Was not that interested as a 6.1 cost like 10 grand or more minus the transmission.

If you are able to get a lift out 5.7 with wiring, etc. and trans in the 4.5K or so range, that looks pretty attractive.  350 or more crank HP with 20 mpg and overdrive gearing cruising down the highway are not bad.  Heck, someone totals a 09 or up Ram truck, and if its a 2WD that's 390 HP with a sweet torque curve drivetrain.

Has anyone here done the swap?
A predator tuner and some headers, etc. and you are looking at over 325 RWHP for a pretty modest investment- etc.

The biggest hurdle of this swap includes the fuel system, and electrical wiring...     granted you can purchase a harness, computer, and fuel system that works....    but I am making my own because I am a cheap college student...    If you had the engine (5.7 or 6.1) and needed the fuel system, wiring, computer, front runner you are looking at about $6,000.00+ just for the parts to swap - not including the engine....

I try to update my thread as much as possible...   Autodynamics (PetE) has also done this swap as well but he used a Keisler Auto transmission kit...    I am using a Tremec 5-speed manual trans myself.

I have done the 5.7 Swap two times myself

I have about 10 grand into my current setup...when I pop for the new 4 speed setup and rear end it will be another 6500.00 :icon_smile_blackeye:

Hey guys.  I seen this in the local classifieds and just thought "wow" this guy is nuts!  Because he says the engine seams to turn freely and wants $8000.  Or am I just too innocent?  I'm not looking for one, just came across it.

Bob, for a viper motor tranny that is not bad really, esp if it includes the electronics.... I do not know if they were always alum, but my understanding is the Viper V-10 were alum.  The truck ones are steel....again I maybe wrong on that too.

i'm showing on the nation wide salvage locators that just the motor alone no accesories , wiring/brain  or trans go for 4500 -5000 k  .  As a pull out 8k is fair retail price .
GO SELL CRAZY SOMEWHERE ELSE WE ARE ALL STOCKED UP HERE

I wouldn't mind just sticking a carb & distributor onto a modern Gen-III Hemi.

How would you power the distributor? Belt drive? Where would you get an intake manifold? Is someone making conversion kits?

Someone is making a Distributor - but honestly why step 4- years back in technology ?    Keep the COP set up and run an MSD box to power them - bolt on an intake and run a 750cfm carb...       I have thought about it on my 6.1 but again - why go backwards...   EFI is the way to go.   :2thumbs:

To each his own.

The computers have their benefits.  I'd probably keep the electronics if the motor came with the stuff and it was ready to run for the most part.

But if I bought a modern motor that didn't have any of that stuff with it . . .  I don't see the wisdom of dropping $3000-$5000 on some wiring & circuit boards in an attempt to save $10/month in gas.  Whereas a carb & dist have a certain old-car charm to them.

I'm in the middle of this swap now and using suggestions from various forums its going fairly well. I'm using the carbed crate engine which comes with the computer and wiring harness. The supplied wiring diagram is very vague with some connections not even shown. The engine is mated to the original sb727 trans with a new convertor and MP flex plate. TTi headers fit perfectly and went on in the car with no modifications. The oil pan and pickup had to be changed. TTi conversion mounts were also used.

A number of electrical issues have to be addressed.

Tach- there is a tach adapter that I bought from MP and it will be wired in.
Amp meter- this will be converted to a voltmeter using an article from a recent Mopar Action
Fuel Pump- found that the supplied wiring harness and fuse box has a built in relay so this makes it easier

Hmmm, You know what kinda of Stroker you can get for that kind of money?...
