I don't get it (NFL retro uniforms)

So I'm watching the Tennessee Titans play the NE Patriots right now and the Titans are wearing Houston Oilers uniforms. Ok, I know that the Titans used to be the Oilers but by that same logic shouldn't the Baltimore Ravens be wearing Cleveland Browns uniforms on retro day? And what do the expansion team Browns wear on retro day? And couldn't the Houston Texans be wearing the old Oilers uniforms just as easily as the Titans? I don't consider them to be any less or more the Oilers than the Titans. This is getting silly.

Silly and boring. I can't stand the retro uniforms, just play the game. :flame: :Twocents:

I agree

After that 59-0 beat down the Titans need to lock those uniforms up for good. I have never seen a Jeff Fisher coached team get beat that bad.

I got a reasonable answer from a friend of mine who's a sports writer at the newspaper where I used to work:

"It's all in celebration of 40 years since the merger of the AFL-NFL...so the original teams (and refs) are wearing original AFL garb during certain weeks.  As for the Browns, they were able to retain their team rights when they moved to Baltimore, so the Browns are a Cleveland-only brand."

I still say the Titans wearing Oilers uniforms is a stretch but... whatever.

Speaking of the AFL/NFL merger...Showtime has this awesome 3 part documentary about the history of the AFL and it's rivalry with the NFL in the 60's. I strongly recommend it - it's probably on Showtime InDemand.

I like them too. I'm just confused about this Titans/Oilers thing.

confused? what do you mean? Like in week two, when the Jets were wearing throwback uniforms from their days as the NY Titans and they played the Tennessee Titans, who were wearing their uniforms from the Houston Oiler days?

The Titans should have left the name, colors and records in Houston and started fresh. Just like the Ravens when they left Cleveland and left the team name, colors and records behind in Cleveland. The Texans should be the Oilers. TEXANS just sound too generic to me and the Oilers had a long history in that city. Titans owner Bud Adams was too big of a selfish A-hole to do that though.  :rotz:

Fans in Tennessee have absolutely no connection to that old Oilers uniform.

Yes they did and the Tennessee fans complained about the name Oilers so much that Bud Adams caved in and changed the name to Titans. Most fans complained that oil has nothing to do with the state of Tennessee. Adams was going to leave them as the "Tennessee Oilers" before the fan backlash.

There aren't any oil wells in Tennessee? Um, yes there are. In fact I bet there are way more oil wells in Tennessee than there are mythological deities. Some team names based on local industry are pretty stupid (like Packers for meat products) but Oilers isn't bad. Steelers is ok too I guess but I'm not sure why people would complain about the name Oilers.
