Any refrigerator techs out there?

A couple of years ago we bought a new top of the line Whirlpool side by side refrigerator.  There was an odor that smelled like some kind of chemical substance when opening the doors or getting ice from the dispenser on the door.  I just chalked it up to being something like that new car smell and it would go away shortly, but it never really did.  It just became less intense with the unit being opened and closed several times on a daily basis.  We just returned from a three week trip and the odor is worse than ever.  In fact, I can now TASTE it when eating food that has been stored in there.  The taste remains in my mouth for hours!  This can't be good!  It has nothing to do with any food or water being stored in it.  I called the service department where we bought it and asked them if it somehow could be a refrigerant smell.  I agreed with him that any refrigerant odor would have to be caused by a leak and that the unit would have lost it's charge long ago.  He had no idea what could be causing it.  We've got a five year warrantee on the thing, so I think I will have them come look at it.  I think I've got a very expensive health hazard setting in my kitchen.  Anybody have any ideas what could be causing this?  Thanks,  Bob

The water supply is from our own well (350 feet deep).  It's nice fresh water with no odors at all.  The refrigerator we had before this one never had any odor issues either.  Something strange is going on though.  :brickwall: :brickwall:  Bob

Assuming its still cooling well, im going to vote that its not the refrigerant. After a bit of google searching,  a problem similar to yours turned out to be the insulation in the fridge getting wet and emitting a chemical odor.

Thanks FLG!!!!!  That would make sense.  I'll Google it also.  It could be a leaking water line inside the unit or condensation.  Bob

A similar thing happened to my brand new side-by-side unit.. I thought something died inside the fridge, it was nasty.. Luckily this was while it was still under warranty..

These things aren't built to last any more.. I remember my grandparents talking about the fridge in their cellar that they had for 30 years.. Good luck with one of these new computer controlled fridges.. They look cool, but it's just more to break down.
