Epoxy prime the engine block?

I'm thinking about putting epoxy primer on the bare block and heads when I get it back from the machine shop but first I need to run the wire wheel over some areas that have surface rust (they couldn't bead blast the block like they normally do).

So, what cleaner should I use to prep the engine for primer? What kind of epoxy primer would you use? Are most of them good up to 400-degrees or so?

I used the engine paint kit from POR15.  Turned out great.  It's a 4 step process but worth it!  First one was done ten years ago and still looks like new.

There's a member here, daytonakid, who did a base coat clear coat job on one of his engines and says cleanup is a snap. I don't think I'll go that far but I do want a good primer. I'll have to check out that POR deal. I'll be checking with the guy who redid my engine compartment too.

Get 2K epoxy primer. It'll stick on there real good. You want to clean block with wax and grease remover before you apply any paint to it. Clean it up real good with shop towels to a point where there's no dirt residue on a towel.

Curtis, I didn't have the best of luck using PPG epoxy primer on an engine. Even though it was spotless clean, it has flaked off in spots over the years. I don't think it likes heat very well.
I actually had good luck simply using high-heat engine primer in a spray can from Duplicolor. I've done several engines with this stuff, they have held up well.
I used Eastwood's ceramic engine paint on my most recent engine, I liked it a lot. Good color (Hemi Orange), and a nice gloss without being too shiny. I sprayed it out of a gun, also using the hardener & reducer that went along with it.

Does Eastwood's have that stuff in Chrysler blue that you know of?

Curtis,

I simply clean them really well and shoot acrylic enamel right over the bare cast....you can get away with this on the valve covers etc. too but I usually seal those before hand. I have also had bad luck priming cast iron.

:iagree: here's my 360.... Acrylic enamel (with hardener) no priming. Just scrub, scrub, scrub...then scrub again then paint. Good luck.

Bull, everytime I've painted an engine after being sand blasted. I simply seal them in a DPLF sealer, PPG 50 or 90, Grey or Black then paint them either single stage or base clear and they have lasted many years like so.

Hey, you can hate the game but don't hate the player.

I'm seeing a pattern here. :2thumbs: Thanks for the input.

Is it just me or does it look too dark?

Curtis,

All you need is simple acrilyc enamel. The color I use is 88 Porsche m7 .....If youve seen any pics of the engine in my 68 you will know the color. Ive painted them like that for about 15 years now and they are all holding up nicely.

I think that's what my latest paint guy said too. How much do I need? A quart or less?

A pint can do it but I usually get a quart,to be safe.

:yesnod: I'll be taking it and the engine up to the paint shop as soon as the engine is done. I don't have the room to do it in a warm/dry environment with the car plugging up the garage so I'm going to pay him $200 to do it for me. That includes all the cleanup and prep work. Not bad. :shruggy:

jerry

it takes about an hour to clean a new rebuilt hot tanked engine and paint it  so i guess $200.00 an hr is not bad.  :smilielol: put lacquer thinner in spray gun spray engine and bellhousing if its a 4-sp .take air hose blow off engine , mix paint  spray 3 coats .DONE :popcrn:

200.00 may be a little on the steep side considering it doesn't include paint ,BUT It will take longer than 1 hour to clean mask and shoot an engine the way I clean mask and shoot an engine......It needs to be clean everywhere if the paint is going to stick, let alone whether its going to fisheye etc.

Curtis,

If you trust this guy is going to be doing an excellent job,pay him the 200.00 and move on to the next step.

Well, like I said, I don't have a place to do it. If it were 70-degrees outside and dry that would be a different story but the only place I have to do it is the four feet of space between the Charger and my tool box. :shruggy: And I believe the $200 includes the paint but I'll check.

Ok I just figured since you looking into how much paint to get,You were paying for it. ....By the way I reccoment using hardener in it too. It will be shineier than orig, but its much easier for cleaning it. You will be cleaning it for a long tme to come so, that becomes important atleast to me.....I love a clean car,but I hate cleaning them!  :brickwall:
...........Thats one thing that I will NOT miss about my 68 is taking care of and cleaning black paint....Never a better color for a charger as far as looks, but it is a constant job to keep it lookingf fresh!

I asked about the paint because I often like to buy the parts/paint beforehand so I know it's what I want and then knock that cost off the final price. I don't like worrying that the people doing work for me are halfway done and used the wrong stuff.
