74 Challenger
I'm wondering what this relay does and do I need it? It connects to the ignition relay and I'm thinking I can eliminate it by simply attaching the two yellow wires to the ign. relay and taking out the ground and power.

I'm just trying to cleanup under the hood

My first thought was it was an auxiliary starter relay...note the red "pushbutton?"

But I think that may be wrong....

greatwn73

the push button is non functioning, somebody told me once that it allowed the car to start without the seatbelts done up - something for 74 only. Its not in any wiring diagrams I have.

Well, I have seen them before...long time ago....I'll be following this thread to find out what it is also....I knew what it was long ago....but that was back when I could remember stuff

yes. in case of seatbelt control unit fail, or some mechanical repairment.

On 74s ( USA MODELS ) you couldn't crank the engine without fasten the seatbelt firts. Canadian models were without that requirement. On Canadian models the interlock control unit works just like a Buzzer and warning signals brain unit, so not really an "interlock" unit. Canadians shouldn't get that reset button I think

Makes sense its an american car. can I disconnect it?  thanks nacho

Nacho-RT74

Can you ? well, yes... but do you have a blue or white control box or an orange control box down the dash ? ( at a side of glovebox )

Blue and white boxes are USA seatbelt interlock boxes. In case of fail you'll need that button OR jump the relay.

Orange boxes ( Canadian ) doesn't need that button since is not a seatbelt interlocked box.

Even being an Interlocked box You can modify the wiring though, not hard to do. Several ways to do it.

here is how it works.

there are some other wires involved to interlock box, but thats the basic.

Orange ( canadian ) box does have an internal Jumper built in printed circuit box, and reset button is unexistant. In fact as far I know the reset button plug is not pressent on engine harness

The seat belt interlock, in all its forms, merely interupts the start circuit which is the yellow wire; splicing the yellow wires together returns control of the starter to the ignition switch.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Nacho-RT74

Doesn't need to make that... More simply than that: just turn around the yellow and yellow traced wires locations on back of bulkhead will do that :D

no soldering gun, tape or cut any wire, just bend the terminal tabs on bulkhead cavities, remove terminals, get back the tabs and turn around wires... VOILA!
