I am buying a car from New York but ran into what I thought might have been a deadend. The seller told me that he did not have a title because anything pre-75 does not require a title but instead only requires a registration slip. The thing is, I used to own this vehicle and sold it to a guy in Connecticut, who then sold it to New York. When I sold the car, I sold it with a title. When I try to transfer ownership back into my name will I have a problem getting a title in my state of Mississippi? The seller said he will be able to sign off on the back of the registration. Please give me your Advice. Thanks!

Tis true about NY not having a title pre '75.  The registration transfers ownership.  You shoulkdnt have a problem bringing it back into your name/state....check with the DMV though

Don't come to Maine then.  This state doesn't require a title for anything over 15 years old... BTW that's a 1994 and older vehicle(this year anyway).

It isn't fishy to me.  Run the VIN with the police for stolen if it makes you comfortable and go get the car. You'll be fine. Now go!
Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

Some states do require a notorized bill of sale in addition to the NY transferable registration.

So, as mentioned, be sure to check with your local DMV or BMV first.

It can be real hard to get paperwork from sellers AFTER they have the money.

I have bought 2 cars from NY and just make sure it is a transferrable registration. This was good to export into Canada. Gerry

I've been to this party.  Get them both at time of sale!!!!!!

A kidney wouldn't get me an Ohio title without both.

Years ago I bought a '64 chebby from a seller in Rochester, NY. No title but with a bill of sale. That time I didn't encounter any difficulties exporting the car to Europe.

Sounds legit to me.  I have sold and bought many 69 cars from all over and registered them in Ct, and they do keep the title.  It is true.  All you need is a bill of sale to register it like what he is telling you in New York.  In fact when I bought cars out of Ct I used to just keep the title and make a fake name in Ct.  Then because of people like me they made you prove it was previously registered in Ct and if they didnt have a record of it you had to bring the car down for them to inspect the Vin.
My Charger came fron CA with no title.  He mailed it to me, but I never got it?
This car was sold many years ago to somebody in Wisconsin. I now am retired and living in Florida.
