Sharks scare the crap out of me but they also fasinate me (as long as I'm in KS that is)......

Does anybody have a picture of like the largest great white shark?  I once seen a video of a great white pulling a fishing boat backwards just off the coast of Florida....the video was shot from a helicopter from above and the owner of the boat was hoping to capture the shark.  I just remember that the boat was said to be 25 ft long and the shark was every bit that lenght..........SCARY!!   :scared:

The largest Great Whites are 25-30 ft, as far as I know.  Big, but, not big compared to what ELSE is swimming out there.

sweet. I love sharks. ever since I was a kid and went to see JAWS at the theatre, I have been fascinated by them. I went down to the Monterey Bay Aquarium this year to see the female they had in their tank, but they had let her go. apparently, she had attacked and killed two other sharks in the pool.  :o  FREEEAAAKY!

Old Moparz

I know there's a slim chance of becoming shark food if you're in the water, but when I saw "JAWS" in the theater, it scared the crap out of me.  :o  I thought about it everytime I went in the water for a few years.

Grumble, I don't have a scanned pic, but have you heard of a megalodon? There is a pic with 4 guys(2 standing) inside a set of jaws from one of these monsters, It's BW and from the 1920's I think. I guess I'll go surfing for the pic.

On the tip of eastern Long Island, NY every summer they have large shark tournaments. I kind of dislike them because most of the sharks caught and killed are blue fin sharks that are simply discarded in a dumpster once weighed. Occasionally a nice Mako is caught. Now that's good eating fish! Back in the 60's there was a famous fisherman off Montauk point called Mundus and he specialized in hunting white sharks. Jaws was based on several of his stories. I also think he has a record on a white shark.

Great White sharks are incredible creatures. I don't recall what aquarium I was a few years back (been to a few with my son and wife) and there was a replica of a megladon's jaws. It was massive, but like was mentioned earlier it was just a man made jaw using some teeth and math to figure out the jaw size. They can't prove it was that big just assume. They are assuming that the teeth back then were the same proportionally as they as in todays age.

As far as them being around for 100's of millions of years. I guess that would be up to the person reading the text. To me the earth is no where near that old. To others is billions of years old. All I know for certain is how long we have recorded of things being on earth and that is limited to a few thousand years.

2fast4u

Soooo....is the picture with the 4 white suits standing inside jaws for real?   and if so....how big would they estimate the shark to be that wore that smile?

60 feet 60 million years ago..

Orange_Crush

The megalodon's Jaws were estimated to be that size based on tooth size.  They are figuring that, based on the fact that a Megalodon's tooth (except for its size) is nearly identical to a great white's tooth, they are figuring that it would be somewhat of a "scaled up" great white.

Considering the fact that sharks have really not changed that much relative to other living things, AND based on the fact that Sharks are thought to be older than every other type of organism in existence (including reptiles and birds), I'd say its a pretty safe assumption that the only real difference between a Megalodon 60 million years ago and a Great white today would pretty much center around size.

Now...did you all know that great whites are in danger of extinction?

They have been near extintion for some time now, even before the movie Jaws, when people fished the population down even further. It has been awhilesince I read up on them but I think great whites take 13 years to reach sexual maturity. Then they don't breed often due to the fact that they are "loners" and few in numbers, which dimensions the rate further.

How intelligent of you....

Mother Nature makes few mistakes, and when she does, she corrects them herself.  Which basically means that sharks have a purpose for living.  They've been around one HELLUVA long time.  In fact, compared to them, apes, and humans, are just a blink of an eye on the timeline.  They are around, because they are SUPPOSED to be.  And, if they are gone, then a MAJOR ecological niche will be left empty, causing quite alot of damage.
