VIN, Tag, Sheet and Body Numbers...

Something interesting I've noticed about my car. The VIN, fender tag and broadcast sheet all have XP29G0Gxxxxx1. The number stamped into the radiator yoke has GOxxxxx3!...............exactly two digits higher! I have not checked to number under the trunk seal yet........... Everything seems on the up an up, it's not a rare car, not even a big block car. No sign tampering or anything like that.

Factory screw up?

How common is this?

I would think it's a factory mistake... The truck I bet looks just like the care support....... No sense cloning a XP car.....

Interesting reading, and I don't think that many people would have noticed the transposed 7 and 9.

The factory was far from perfect. A minor flaw like that would easily be overlooked many times too.

Happens all the time.  Think of how boring that job must have been changing the numbers for each car and stamping them all day. 

I checked out a 70 Chally 340, non R/T car (big dumb move not buying that car!) that seemed to have a good VIN, but the rad support was mis stamped like yours and the cowl had a mistake!  This car was a CA car and had never been restored.

Years ago I saw a 1970 Challenger SE for sale in Arizona. The cowl number was stamped seven times. I wondered if the guy stamping that car was trying to squish a spider or what. I wish I had a photo of it. 

If any car has an error on the body stamping, it is usually repeated on the second stamping. Body stampings are typically identical, errors and all.

If anyone has photos of factory errors please let me know? I have thought about dedicating some web space to them.

Thanks Chris! I have started an article on the subject, simple format, brief explantion followed by a photo. I have a fair number of different "errors" on file already, I just had to organize them. Once the section is ready to view I will post a new thread with a link.
