guys,
I am going to change the stripe on my Charger,,,69 RT

I need to REMOVE the stripe that is on the car now,,without messing up the paint....

I plan on putting another stripe on the car,,,( different color ),,,,so it will go in the exact same spot.

What is the best way to remove an existing stripe ??

hair dryer,,,?

any tips,,,techniques that have worked for you in the past ?

thanks,

Doug

Troy

A heat gun works well. 3M makes and adhesive remover that I've heard good things about too.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

Just 6T9 CHGR

Hair drier or heat gun on low setting....try & pull off at an angle so not to put too much stress on the paint.  Hope & pray that your paint prep was good or you'll be peeling paint off as well...

It's vinyl tape right? Eraser wheel would work great on that

Where do you get one of the eraser wheels at ????

Charger-Bodie

Don Not use an eraser wheel on a large stripe .The eraser wheel is very likely to create too much heat and burn the paint.

Use the hair drier and adhesive remover method. It is much safer

:iagree:  like I said in your other post. I've removed a lot a stripes. Depending how old it is, it might break. But keep working at it.  :2thumbs:

My daughter & I used Mom's hair dryer on the longitudinal stripe on the Challenger.  No where inconspicuous with that stripe to start with.  I think I'd start on the bottom w/ your Bee stripe.  If you're like me it'll pull the paint up in the most obvious place.

What color stripe you going with?  Black?

thanks guys,,,,,,,,, a bit nervous about messing up the paint after reading some of the replys.....

I have a white stripe on the car now............

this is the look i am going for,,,see pic below............

R2

What do you recomend to get the adhesive off,,,,,If i use the hair dryer method ?,,,, is there some paint friendly stuff available from the local AutoZone,,,NAPA,,etc ?

1HOT DAYTONA,,,do you remember me ? This is Ron's bud from St Louis ( had the 65 white Belvedere pitted next to Ron )

Doug....there is an adhesive remover called Goo-B-Gone that works really well on delicate surfaces. The heat gun is a good way to loosen up the adhesive for removal of the decal. I like the flat black butt stripe for your ride....very sinister looking.  :icon_smile_big:

Thanks Ron,
I dont have a "heat" gun ,,, but could use the wife's hair dryer,,, :scratchchin:
I might give it a shot,,,and try and pull the stripe,,,,,,,,

No remnants on mine.  Only needed the hair dryer.

Yeah, a hair dryer worked for me.  I did mine in the middle of winter in a cold garage so it took a long time.  My stripe was 15 years old.  It left a lot of glue behind so I used 3M adhesive remover which took care of it pretty good.  It turns the glue into a substance which looks like snot and you can scrape if off with a credit card, or a debit card, whichever works best for you.

I used an eraser wheel to get rid of the little bits left over.  You have to be careful with that or you'll burn the paint pretty easily.

R2

Well,,,,it's off,,,,

Used a hair dryer,,,,took a while,,,,,

removed the adhesive with "goo gone",,,,worked pretty well..........

Going to order a new matte black stripe,,,,

I'll post some pics when it's done..........

Any suggestions you guys have on applying the new stripe is welcome.
I have put a few on before,,,,previously i just used some dishsoap and water,,,on both the stripe and car,,,and "floated" it into place,,,,than used a squeegie' (sp) to get the water/bubbles out,,,,then dryed with a hair dryer,,,,

Thanks for the link Troy.  Very good explanation on stripe installation....i have done a few before,,,but that was a good refresher.

I guess I'm thinking of 70 then. :shruggy: So the 69s either got the R/T cutout stripe or the emblem?

Yep  :yesnod:...however, Doug's car has the emblems (originally a stripe delete car) so I'm guessing he's going with the '70-style plain stripe and keeping the emblems like he had before with the white stripe. :scratchchin:

:scratchchin: I got the new stripe,,,,,,,,, waiting for the weather to warm up a bit so i can put it on,,,,,,,,,,,

Im kinda stuck with the stripe/emblem thing...

The car IS a "stripe delte" car,,,,,,so,,it has two holes on each side for the emblems...........

previously i had to "cover" them up,,,,hence putting the emblems OVER the stripe,,,( not correct,,,,and i like the stripe by itself as well,,,without the stripe + emblem ),,,,but no way to hide the holes,,,prevent water entrance,,etc,,,,,

Eventually,,,,the whole car will come apart,,,,,sent out for body and paint,,,,and will have to decide what to do,,,,

For now,,,i wanted a color change with the stripe,,,,,

might be able to get the "stripe" delete look,,,,,( with the matte black stripe ),,,and the emblems..........

we'll see,,,,,,stripe is going on today...............

will try and post some pics..................

Maybe you can plug the holes temporarily and go with the stripe alone until you tear it down. You probably don't do much poor-weather driving do you? And I can't imagine those emblems keep much moisture out anyway.

R2

Well,,,,,,,

It's installed and ON the car.......... turned out well.......... :2thumbs:

I do have a few small bubbles to deal with,,,, :flame:,,,,,, i was going to leave it alone for a few days,,,,and see if it evaporates out.....

It looks STEALTH-ish.........   :coolgleamA: :coolgleamA: :coolgleamA: :coolgleamA:

I think i am going to like it..... :2thumbs:

pics to follow at some point.............. :icon_smile_wink:
