ammeter problems

mine is broken im sure but if i get some of those aftermarket gauge clusters with oil pressure, water temp and ammeter will it still power my car?? cause i know that all the power through my car passes through the ammeter and what i was thinking about doing is un hooking the one from my dash to the one on my after market cluster. but i dont know if it would still power my car? its a 68 charger 318 btw

As long as current flows both ways through the replacement ammeter it will power the car just like the original.

Others will suggest tying the two wires on the original ammeter together and running a volt meter instead of an ammeter.
