motherboard chips help!!!

The motherboard is for my x-box 360 and 2 of the tiny chips came off. Whats the best way to reattach them?

If its the kind with spider legs you can try to CAREFULLY solder it back on to the part that broke off.  This is near impossible though as the wire likes to run when heated and if it runs into contact with the leg parallel to it than the chip will not function properly.  So you can try to fix it but if it fails just buy a junked one off ebay with a bad cd drive as the motherboard should still be good.

I'd bet that they are surface mount chips and you can't really put them back on the board.
They are usually applied using a conductive adhesive but that needs some specialized equipment to dispense properly.

The cause is usually too much heat in the system
This is what melts the cheap flowed solder and make you experience the dreaded RROD (Red Ring of Death)
Now if you are a really good solderer, you CAN resolder these. but dont try it at home. Pay a shop $75-$100 to fix it or buy a new one !!

I was taking my x box apart because it had an overheating malfunction.
Troy-Not really sure how they came off.
But not to worry anymore, superglue did the trick with VERY steady hands and tweezers.

Its fixed.

I really can't believe you got super glue to work   I almost need to see pictures, just remember though KEEP IT COOL whatever way you can, even if you need to get one of those triple pack fans they sell for it because I dont know how well superglue is going to stand up to the heat?  Your guess is probably just as good as mine?

Did you get super glue in between the chip and it's mounting points or did you put the chip in place and then super glue around the edges?

I don't know is super glue is conductive or not. You might have just enough on there to hold things and allow a connection, but it might not be the most optimal connection. If it is conductive, then, well, all you've got to worry about is if it will hold up to the heat as ZSmithers said.

The second option should work, but I'd be concerned about the connections being open to the air as opposed to sealed in solder/adhesive... but if it works - at least for now - then that's all that matters, right? 

I'm just curious about the fix and how it was done.

What causes the 3 ring is your GPU and CPU being overheated.

Thats what mine had i did a specific mod on it and its holding up great. Since my x box is 4 years old i now have a harddrive problem.

Efffff. Ok guys i have another question because i have no clue on even what to think.

Ill turn on my x box and play for maybe 10-20 minutes and ill get the message on my screen saying disc cant be read. It does this every time. I recently took apart my GPU and CPU to put some new (silver 5) thermal paste inbetween them. When i feel the back of the box it feels pretty warm. Could the dvd drive be getting to hot?

What can i do to keep the dvd drive cool if that is the problem?

If i let it sit for like 5 minutes and put the disc back in it works for another 10-15 minutes.

And i can fix this i just need to find out whats wrong with it first.

Ya i suppose i could buy the $20 cooler. I just wish there was a way of knowing because it has never done this until i did the x-clamp fix inside of it. The x-clamps are what microsoft dont fix when you send it in.

Maybe try a regular fan - even a hand held one - blowing on the side of the case just to see if any kind of cooling extends the run time. If that works out, then look at a more permanent solution like the fan units available..

Ok what you do here is take a q-tip with alchohol and rub it on the laser eye for the disc reader then flip it over and use the dry side to dry off the alchohol you just put on.  This fixes mine every time I get that error.   In order to get to the disc eye you have to take the cd rack apart but its pretty straight forward. 

Look at any of your discs do they have a ring around the reading surface?  If they do than your CD drive is most likely beyond cleaning as it not only damages the discs when the eye gets so dirty it has to get that close. It also damages the reader eye as well. There are also other reasons why the eye would come into contact with the disc even if you clean it, being jarred slightly while reading a disc previously is usually the number one cause.

I cleaned it when i had it all apart the first time. Why would it read for 15 minutes then out of no where stop working?

Than you either have damage to the drive or the motherboard is still shot and after 15 minutes after everything gets up to temperature something is failing to remain reliable.  Which could be because of the glue or it could be because of some completely different chip malfunctioning its hard to tell.  Either way you can be sure it is because of the heat and not a software error. If it was it wouldn't work from the start or it would only work until you made it to a certain point at which it was corrupted, not a specific time frame unless you keep putting in the same game or cd and getting to the same point and it fails.  Why did you have the device apart in the first place?

If so how much? Ive been using this stuff on my computer builds for years and i cant count how many people over apply the stuff. Its meant to fill microscopic deformities on the metal surfaces, put too much and it turns into a insulator. The best way to apply is is to put a dab on the chip and on the heatsink then take your hand put it in a zip lock bag and spread it over the chip and heatsink you want to spread it to a haze, yes just a light haze. If you need you can use a lint free cloth (also can use a coffee filter) to remove some of the stuff so you get it to a haze.
