Repro consoles: Stinger Vs. L and P.

Yes... because I'm either a.  Independently wealthy and don't care if I piss away $250... or b.  stupid  -
I have purchased one of each of the known repro consoles.

I bought the Stinger (fiberglass)  last year and attempted to work with it for awhile knowing that it was a do it yourself project requiring drilling out holes and painting also.   Well... it never made it into the car after I spent a lot of time trying to take a definite warp out of it and trying to find a way to glue plastic blocks onto the inside to use as screwholes for the various pieces that have to be bolted to it.   The Stinger only came as a automatic and I had to take some cuts out to make it work for 4 speed since my car has the hump welded in... Obviously this is more work for me and not necessary for an auto car.

I got the L and P in the mail earlier in the week but I finally took it out of the box and took some pics so you can all make an informed choice at my expense.   For what it's worth the L and P is faithful to the original design and is already drilled for the chrome side pieces and doesn't require any gluing or painting unless your interior is not black.a
L and P sells your choice of auto or 4 speed.

So right to the pics...

1. stinger top,  l and p bottom
2. l and p top, stinger bottom
3. stinger right, l and p left.
4. l and p right, stinger left.

4.  bottoms....  the stinger is kinda obvious.

Oh.. yeah... the "correct"  answer to the multiple choice was c. STFU I do what I want.  :icon_smile_dead:

Well Brian, thanks for taking one for the team. Looks like L&P is the winner. Did it cost about the same as the Stinger? Apparently the L&P console is the one being sold by Year One.

Thanks for the info.

The L & P console looks like a quality piece. From your pics it looks like the Stinger's fit and finish leaves something to be desired.

L and P is injection molded plastic -  see http://www.landpenterprise.com/

Stinger is fiberglass - see http://www.stingerfiberglass.com/index.shtml

Since I purchased the fiberglass Stinger last year...  they have since come out with their own 4 speed design but I can't say if the fit / finish or mounting points and need for paint are any better going by the pics.   I just know I have some time into the Stinger and I coated it with SEM colorcoat system tuxedo black and so it looks better than it did.

Since they're close in price,  I'd be using the L and P.   It's much more accurate as delivered without the work.

In my younger days when I'd drive around with the girlfriend on the console and her fat friend taking up the passenger seat,  I'd have probably liked the extra strength and ridgidity of the Stinger if I had to energy to get it finished.   Nowadays that isn't a problem  :P

I haven't checked what is being sold by YO.    I purchased Stinger over the phone and L and P off their website.

Is it just an illusion or is the L&P longer? I like the L&P way more. Looks right. Thanks for the side by side comparo. Do you have a website you can add this to for future reference?

Thanks for the comparison Brian.   :2thumbs:

If I didn't have a couple of originals in good shape, I'd definitely go for the L & P without hesitation. It looks good, & they are supposed to have more parts available too. After seeing the stinger one, I don't blame you for buying the other. I guess when you do fiberglass & the need for a part arises, that's what you make it from. If L & P never made it, the Stinger would be the only one to fill the void.

Well I just hit the "Buy it now" :boogie: :boogie: :boogie:     Thanks for checking these out,   Brian!!!   You and L&P just saved me the horror of hacking a big hole in the side of my PRISTINE original automatic console I've had tucked away for years :o

Congrats.     I see somebody also BIN'd the auto console too so they've put some more up...  shouldn't be too hard for folks to figure it out tho.

I didn't have any problem hacking up my original auto console cause it's severely cracked and chipped.    I pulled it out last night and started transferring the parts over.  So far so good.   My old original will be dumpster'd.   I'm not sure what to do with the  Stinger  :P

Brian,

If you don't mind the trouble of packaging, why not put both on ebay? The original can possibly be used as parts so someone who welds plastic can use it for patching. For the Stinger, explain what it is & there may be someone willing to cobble it to make it work if it's cheap enough. If they don't sell, then trash them.  :shruggy:
