Throttle response under load

Just wondering what would cause an engine to run good at idle in the driveway, with good throttle response, but then bog out when accelerating under load like up a hill or onto the freeway?

Most likely it's too lean. What's your engine/carb setup? Is it weak everywhere or just at certain throttle positions or RPMs? Does it backfire through the carb? Need more info.
