I used this thing http://www.jani-immonen.net/decoders/tag6768.html

It says "this info is not complete and that some results may or may not be correct"

:cheers: Thank you for the clarification.

According to the other site HP engines were not just for R/T models seeing as some of these engines were not available in the R/T package.  I think it just generally reffers to all engines with the 4bbl option instead of 2.  Correct me if I'm wrong also please show refference so nobody can tell me otherwhise if I need to correct them  :coolgleamA:

The HP designation for the 383's is reserved for the Superbees and Roadrunner in 1968. These threads http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,37920.0.html and http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,37920.0.html will explain (or try to... :D) all.

Only to tell the owner when the car was scheduled to be built. Could have been a few days either side of that date. Helpful to know for certain accessories usages, and production part changes. Actual production usually started Aug 1st for next years model, so '68's were built from August 1, 1967 to July 31, 1968.

Was the HP not used in the chargers in 68' in a 383? Replies on here said they were in roadrunners and superbee's only but my fender tag states my 383 is an hp.

JamieZ

Early 68s (made in 67) had some differences over later 68s (made after Jan 1, 1968).  The seat belts in the front became 3 point mandatory, as did headrests on Jan 1, 1968.  Prior to that they were optional (i.e. early 1968s could have only lap belts and no head rests).

That is correct...no Hp motors in the '68 Charger 383's.

The 383-4bbl 335 horse HP version was not used in 68 Chargers.

It's common for on line decoders and many sources to list the 62 engine sales code number as the HP. This is incorrect. Code 62 only tells you the car had a 383-4bbl, it does not tell you which 383-4bbl the car received. Remember there were three different versions of the 383-4bbl in 68; the A body version, the 383-4bbl 330 horse used in C bodies, Chargers, all Belvedere and Coronet badged models, and Road Runners and Super Bees with A/C and the 383-4bbl 335 horse engine used exclusively in the Road Runner and Super Bee without A/C. See the picture below. All three of these are 383-4bbls and all code 62 on the tag and H in the VIN but they are three different engines.

Headrests were not mandatory until 1/1/69. Many early 69 models do not have headrests. :Twocents:

You are correct, headrests were 1969, my fault, I thought they were 1968.

So when I bought my '68 with a 383, I was told it had a '69 motor in it, but was not told what kind of car it was from.   I was also told (later) it was an HP motor, but didn't care because I was (and still am) planning on replacing it with a 440.

How can I verify if it actually IS an HP from either a RR or SB, or if the guy was just full of... stuff? :)  Is it the heads? Intake? Stampings?

Inquiring minds want to know.
[ŌŌ]ƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖ[ŌŌ] = 68
[ŌŌ][ƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖ][ƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖ][ŌŌ] = 69
(ŌŌ)[ƗƗƗƗƗƗƗƗƗƗƗƗƗƗƗƗƗƗ](ŌŌ) = 70

Two questions in there....

there is a pad on the block on the passenger's side about behind the alternator. On that pad you should find E, for the model year, 383, for the CID and HP, designating the HP assembly, and an assembly date. You may find some other stamps like a Maltese cross.

The only way to know what it came from is by checking the VIN on a pad on the driver's side above the pan rail. That will help narrow down as to what it came from. For '69, the HP application changed. The 383-HP assembly can be found in any 69 B body with a four speed so the engine could have come from a four speed equipped Coronet or Belvedere based car (Coronet 440, Satellite, Sport Satellite, etc), including a RR or SB, or a four speed Charger OR an automatic without A/C RR or SB.

I was ONE day old when this car was built. Would have liked to come across this one.

My 68' must have been due to an early build in 68 because the tag said it was an Hp.  I used the link above to decode the tag, it was actually neat to see it written out.

The pictured engines all appear to have the HP exhaust manifolds, did the non-HP 383 have them in the Charger?

If by 'HP manifolds', you mean 4bbl manifolds, then yes. For B bodies, there are only 2 and 4bbl manifolds. There is no difference between 330 horse and 335 horse manifolds.
