And a couple shots from the very first time I laid eyes on the yellow Bird back in 1982.  I waited over 19 years for the old folks who owned it to call and offer it up to me...

Hey, glad to see you made it back!

I was thinking that looked like a Vega wagon in your avatar, hehe ;D Let's see some pics of that little baby!

Hey, it's good to be back!

Thanks for the kind words about the Bird and YES, I'm getting pretty dang geeked about getting it home!

And yep, that's a 1972 Chevy Vega Kammback wagon in my avatar!  I've wanted a V-8 Vega for over 25 years and was content to just wait around for the right one to come along.  This cae was built some years back with the sole intention of running the mean streets of the Motor City.  Back-half chassis with ladder bars, wheel tubs, 19.5x33 MT's, narrowed 4.88 12-bolt, 12 gallon fuel cell, dual rear-mounted batteries, lightweight buckets, eight point cage, Winters shifter, stroker small block and a 250 horse shot of spray.  The car ran high 9's in the quarter, launched hard and ran straight and true.  The back window where is now lettered "Heartbeat" was lettered with "Show Me The Money".  The owner hauled it around to the city's hot spots on the back of a flatbed and if the money was right, would unload it and run.

The owner's life took a turn for the worse and he fell into hard times.  His wife diivorced him and he fell back into an old coke habit.  One day, he decided to end it all and stepped off the curb and into the path of an approaching bus.  His family sold the car to the guy I bought it from.  He pulled the stroker small block and the nitrous out and put in a basically stock 8.0:1 350 out of a Suburban with the intentions of giving the car to his kid.  The kid got in trouble and the car went up for sale and that's where I stepped in.  It was a totally turn-key car that has a rather tame motor in it.

The very first week I had the car, we took it to the Mopars Against The World At Ubly $10,000 bracket race and lasted five rounds against a field of heavy-hitter bracket racers to come in in the money.  That was way cool.  The car is a total blast to drive and is tons of fun to cruise around in.  I'll eventually yank the low compression Suburban motor and put one of G.M.'s new 454 cubic inch SMALL BLOCK stroker motors in it.  These things put out 625 horses right out of the crate.  For now though, I'm content with leaving it just the way it is and having a blast with it.

Hey dude, welcome back, i've had no one to argue with over at Moparts (i'm BigDude over there)

So lets get right to it....The 9 pager at moparts about the new Challenger proves one thing....We all want one, everyone's in line, my 2 cousins (non car guys) want one. This excitement is what's missing with the Chargers return. The Intrepid replacement barely sells 7000 a month. It can't even outsell its replacement.
So the boring (yawn) Charger is about to be forgotten when this cool Challenger shows up. If this car really is this cool, it proves 2 things...1 The ignorant Mr. Creed actually read his 99 to 1 hate the Charger e-mails, and 2....Mr. Creed will be forced to eat his "anti retro" words..."There is no 2 door car market" and who could forget..."They think there Chargers are the real thing" or "Hey, if you want a '69 Charger then go buy one, there's a market for those cars." What an idiot.

The difference is i would sell my '70 six-pack Charger for this cool new Challenger, but i wouldn't even think about selling it for the Intrepid replacement.  :icon_smile_big:

Naaaaaah, the 8.0:1 Suburban engine is only good for mid 13's so ya wouldn't need a seven seconf head start,   Now when the stroker motor goes in it, ya may need seven seconds!

Yup, I was here back in the summer right up to when the old board died.

I can only WISH that it was the old S&M Bird.   It's an original Alpine White 440 4-barrel Bird that I've owned since I was 18 in 1981.   In 1991, after owning it for 10 years, I got bored one day and wanted to go racing and transformed it into a functioning redreation of the old S&M Bird.   And hey that's way cool that ya wiped the rubber off the real deal back in the day!

Ahhhhhhhhhhh yes, good evening Mr. BD/BL!

You'll have to find someone else to argue with over on Moparts, as you will find me either here or on MoparStyle.

OK, noq that we got the pleasantries out of the way, let's get down to our usual matters at hand!

When you say "this excitement is what's missing with the Charger", what you're forgetting with that statement is that although it IS exciting, the new Challenger will NOT appeal to the masses simply because it is a two door sport couple (pony car).   Two door sport coupes will NOT all of a sudden become all the rage and the general buying public family-type people will NOT be rushing out and buying one.   Dude, we all hang out on old school Mopar message boards.   Of course we all want a car like the new Challenger.   But to think that the new Challenger will outsell vehicles like the Charger/300/Magnum is positively absurd.   The new Challenger WILL make for an AWESOME addition to the Chrysler lineup but will definitely be more of a niche vehicle that will hopefully have enough sales volume to sustain it's existence.   With the quality build of the LX platform vehicles, an unbiased car buyer would surely pick a new Challenger over a Mustang but there is still the "legacy" of the Mustang that has to be overcome.   A lot of people will still buy a Mustang simply because it is a Mustang.

Oh, and let me fill you in a little bit on our experience so far with our new Charger.   After putting 7,000 miles on it driving from Michigan to Florida and back and then from Michigan to Oklahoma, I can assure that every time we stopped, we had people asking about the car, checking it out and many people flat out drooling over it.   Keep in mind that this is a V-6 SXT model, not a R/T or Daytona or SRT-8 or anything fancy like that.   It's the old school Mopar guys that can't hang with it.   The rest of the world is totally digging on it.   Driving it is also an awesome experience.   You're driving a true road machine.   Even with the V-6, there's abundant power and awesome handling.   At 125 MPH, there's plenty of throttle left and the stability is better than a wing car at those speeds.

The bottom line is that the new Charger is everything a proper Charger SHOULD be with the added BENEFIT of two extra doors!   Oh, and yes, we will probably get a new Challenger when it comes out too.   Hey, nice chatting with ya again!

That all depends on how many posts per page you have your preferences on.  It's only four pages for me cuz I have my preferences set to 99 posts per page.  I always thought it was silly when people refer to threads by how many "pages" they are rather than how many "posts".

I'm a little late to the welcoming party I guess.

Welcome to the site John.

So tell us, did you really enjoy the new charger that much? I rented one during the summer for a weekend, when our other car was in the shop, and I was plesently suprised as the comfort. The more I see the cars on the road the more they grow on me. I do love the looks of the SRT-8 however.

So John, do you think that the yellow bird will be done in time for some shows this year?

YES, we DEFINITELY like our new Charger that Much even being the V-6 SXT model.   There bonestly isn't one single aspect of the car that we don't like.   When you really get to appreciate it is out on the open roads.   I've truly come to realize that anyone who DOESN'T like the new Charger truly doesn't know anything about cars and is just all pissy about it being a four door and not the two door sport coupe that they dreamed about.   Too bad, so sad.   Like I said earlier, it's everything a proper Charger SHOULD be with the added BENEFIT of two extra doors.   Oh, and anyone who would buy a Mustywang over a Charger wll be sorry a couple years down the road when that LOVELY Phord Job One Quality starts to show up!   NEW CHARGERS ROCK!!!

Oh, and yeah, the yellow Bird is getting ever so close.   It will probably be done in the next month or two but I'm gonna leave it down at Ken's til next soring rather than road trip down to Arkansas in the dead of winter to pick it up.   I'm hoping to maybe have it at the Columbus Chrysler Classic next June.

I'd have to agree with your point that a lot of folks do not like the car, just because of it's name.  They cannot and will not get past that.

You know what I'd do if I owned that? I'd slap a stroked small block Mopar in there...you know, sorta like a lot of guys who put a Chebby engine in a tubbed Cuda or something, only the reverse. I've always wanted to do that. :D

BTW, cool story on that car. Too bad the guy's life went to hell over a female. :-\

I believe that photo is on a poster or calendar, as well as on the internet where I found it. In the original photo it read "musclecarcalendar.com", without the quotations, though.     Here it is bigger and cropped, I could put the original on here, won't fit the whole thing without the scroll left/right thing, but it would make a cool screen saver with right click and save.

And this is the Pacer I saw this summer, so I snapped a shot of it, this is not a photochop, I know it sort of looks like it, but in the pic from the rear angle you can see the engine through the windshield and the wide slicks.   I kind of liked the rims on it.

Definately looking forward to getting a chance to finally see that wing car too. I have seen both of your other's now. Still waiting on a ride in the Daytona though.

Hehe, that Pacer sorta reminds me of this little car. I haven't seen it around here for 3 or 4 years, but when I took this pic, it had a 392 HEMI in it. ;D

I cruised around on Musclecar Calendar's site .It obviously belongs to that John guy, but didn't find that pic.
