thats why I butcher my own. No waiting. You learn where the good cuts are real quick like.

We cut up our own deer also.  then take the bags of raw meat to the locker to have made into jerky and hot dogs, etc..  We save the loins for our own end of the year feast..  :drool5:  :drool5:  dammit now i'm getting anxious again to hunt..

It's not just about what they do to "us."

Too many is bad for them, as well.

Unchecked, they can expand their population to a point where they eat themselves into ruin.

Best known example that I can think of: there's an island in the middle of the Niagara river with a deer population on it. They get there on an ice bridge during the winter. If hunters don't go over there every year and cull the herd, they'll all eventually die. Never mind that they ruin the entire habitat there and are endangering other animals trying to survive there. And this all happens before they have a chance to get back off of the island by the next winter...

Looking at this from the "us" perspective, if Ogg and Grogg thought there was no point in killing an animal, it's more than likely that we'd all just not exist right now.  :-\ We'd either have eaten everything on our "island" or something else would have eaten us.

Oh and nice buck, by the way.
I'll admit I'm not a hunter myself, unless routing through the meat counter at the grocery store counts.

What about all the poor innocent hogs that have to die to make that venison taste good!

As an estimator at a body shop, I like the over population of deer.  Just kidding, shoot whatever you can!

Hunting...where to start. I tried to this morning (http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,62052.msg692007.html#msg692007) and had a great time hiking up and down the valleys looking for a pig (my buddy and I also had a deer tag so we were prepared for either  :2thumbs:). Didn't see a damn critter except for the spiders and snakes. Still had a great time. It is not a matter of enjoying killing (there is always a small part of me that regrets doing it...hell, when I dive for abalone I always slightly regret killing them just so I can feast on their meat...no difference 'tween the animals to me), but rather it is the necessity of doing it. Food is primary, but protecting your livelihood (crops) is also a primary reason. Silver, serious question; are you a practicing vegetarian? If so then I respect your views but don't agree with them.  :Twocents:

It's pretty pathetic that you are so narrow minded that you can't even see the point of population control. No one said, "Hey let's wipe out every deer on the planet!" Keep rambling your idiotic messages Silver, some day you might be right.

I agree. Lets see here, Since virtually everything that he stuffs in his mouth (ok maybe not everything) comes from a farmer or someone that raises crops of some sort, maybe Silver would like paying $6 for a can of sweet corn or a head of lettuce. And since the deer and other critters have already ate their share, and somebody has to pay for it.

Just so you guys know we grow our own produce, zuccini, apples, tomatoes, cucumbers... just to name a few. Some of it gets canned also for winter.

While I don't fully agree with your views I do agree with your actions.  Being self sufficient is the number one thing to making a lifestyle sustainable, to make sure that you don't overstep your boundaries and become wasteful as so many around us have(including myself at times).  So carry on with the point you are trying to make as this has nothing to do with it but I just wanted to give you a thumbs up  :2thumbs:

And just for everyone else, the point of his message I don't agree on is hunting, I believe hunting is a necessary part of our culture and survival. We have it maintained(ie. hunting season/permits) that our actions are not only acceptable/sustainable as hunters they are necessary in the fact that overpopulation has adverse effects on any ecosystem.

I just don't see the point in killing a defenseless plant. I mean, what did it do to you?

During the early 90's I was driving from college in mankato, mn back home to stevens point, wi just about every weekend and I went through a terrible string of bad luck hitting 5 deer in 3 years in cars and trucks, including my poor old 73, which wasn't feasable to repair at the time, all in wi.  Yes, I hunt not only for the meat but for the safety of all.

Not everybody has the luxury of growing their own food. What about meat, do you eat any of that? It cost almost as much to raise corn to feed cows as it does to raise corn for human consumption.

It's not really a luxury to grow a few tomato plants in your back yard. Get small plants from local grocery store/greenhouse etc and you're set up with tomatoes for rest of year
I know, but I'm not the one mandating 10%ethanol gas either.

p's me off this whole thinning the herd thing is so accepted and encouraged in midwest, but all the tree huggers here can't see the good sense in it and apply it to the see lions, because the dam sea lions are overpopulated in california so they are coming up here and they eat a shit load of salmon everyday, then we fishermen have to pay for our license and can only used single barbless hooks and have a very short season and have to release non-hatchery fish, blah blah, when the dam sealions just sit in front of the fish ladders and suck up the salmon all day long.  the seals sit at the fishing dock and when you tire out a fish, if you even can catch one ever, they just grab it when you are about to get it in your net.   The sea lions are protected by law, the the salmon are endangered species.  if the sea lions are so numerous, why do they get precident over the salmon, total bs.    They should let hunters shoot the sea lions, and feed em to the homeless or something.  they are dumb stupid annoying big fat lazy greedy good for nothing sea pigs that should all be shot and killed.
they spent 175K? to trap this one that sat at the ballard locks at the fish ladder, the city even named him, they sent his ass to california or something, and he swam all the way back and parked his ass there again and just ate all the salmon that we fishermen pay for to try and save, and get slim slim pickings on and high strict regulations, and this thing is protected and they want to "save" him, I agree with killing the thing.   Ya, that 30 point buck is a beautiful specimen, sad to see him killed, but I can see the point of the midwesterners that suffer losses to overpopulations of deer.  and there are no 30 point sea lions, just annoying loud fat fu#$%ers that eat hundreds of endangered wild salmon EACH, (well, they eat a hell uv a lot) everyday.

Why would you want anything else?  Just give me a Charger and I'll be happy.

Yes, we do have all of the above. It didn't happen overnight so you know. Trees were planted years ago and now investment is returning as fruits.
What does ethanol have to do with it? Well it takes a LOT of corn and other produce to make ethanol that could've been used for human consumption or raising cattle.

and the deer eat the corn, so the deer get shot, makes sense

now shoot the sealions for eating hundreds of thousands of endangered salmon every year (or millions maybe)

The corn used in ethanol and for cattle feed is different than corn used for human consumption.

IMHO a human shooting a deer with a high-powered rifle is only "cruel" and "murderous" until you watch how nature keeps things balanced.
