Over the weekend I decided to change the oil & fuel filters on my 2004 Ford (sorry) F-350 PowerStroke. Long story short, I got all the fluids changed and a new air filter and fuel filters all installed, so I hopped in and fired it up. While I'm sitting there with the truck running I happened to glance up at my work table and saw 4 gallons of Rotella oil sitting there smiling back at me. In my head I thought "Hmmm I don't remember putting my empty oil bottles up there". Then it hit me, "they're sitting up there because you never put any oil in the truck" As I glanced down at the instument cluster and saw the "Check Gauges" light practically screaming at me that the oil pressure was approximately 0 psi! Thank God all of this happened in a span of about 10 seconds or so. I proceeded to both curse and pray and turn off the truck at the same time.

I've been changing my oil (and my wife's oil) for years and I've never had that happen to me. I'll bet it doesn't happen again!

Me too. And I was surprised how fast that first quart of oil went right on through the engine. Almost as if it wasn't even there.

I've done plenty of stupid things just not thinking... the difference between someone who knows cars and someone who doesn't though lies in the fact that you caught what you did.  Walmart would have sent you out on the road just like that and wouldn't have said sh*t about it.  I had this moron I was working with at Nissan accidentally turn the oil feed to 20 quarts because the dial has three setters.  One for points of a quart one for singles and one for tens the gauge face looked just like this 00.0.  Well he selected the one for 10s set it to 20 and when oil started spilling all over the floor instead of realizing his mistake guess what he does?  Puts the cap on, drives the car billowing smoke out into the parking lot(brand new car in for first service mind you) tells the lady her car is ready.  She starts flipping out and he says he didn't do anything it was like that when he got it... long story short he no longer works there.

When I change my oil in the Charger, I pull the coil wire and crank it over in steps until I see the oil gauge move.

WoW! My friend had a brand new truck took it in for her first oil change. Drove it home, started to come to work and idiot light came on. She pulls over, checks the engine, rechecks, and fills the oil...calls dealer. First she didn't know what she was talking about and now has too much oil in her engine and gets the lecture about how that will void the warrenty. Well long story short it wasn't until her husband went into the dealership on his way home from work that they listened. She's like me, we know how to do our dailies! We know to check the oil, trans fluid (leave that engine running), and water level on a car that we drive daily. Story given...gun must have misfired...you don't check the level after you fill it? Ok, now I'm scared! Thank God nothing grave happened to your truck. It's the routine things in life that we just walk through that can get us.

I once forgot to put the plug back in the '87 Dodge pickup and had a 5 quart river of fresh oil running down the driveway (I had bought the 5 quart jug) and realized it about the time I poured in the last drop, boy I felt stupid.

3 bags of floor dry later I try again. Dipstick ok.
Start, no oil pressure! WTF? Here comes that puddle again...no filter. 
2 more bags of floordry.

I did an antifreeze change on my Dodge Ram a while ago.
Put the radiator cap on top of my rad support....and forgot it.

Got quite a ways from home - almost two hours - before it boiled over. I couldn't imagine why the temp gauge was pegged!
Popped the hood and....what a mess!
I gave it a half hour to calm down, then drove it the 5 minutes to the closest gas station.

Lucky for me I had no significant effects to my engine. Very lucky!

I got a good one for You.
Recently I changed My cam and when I set My hydraulic lifters I overtightened them causing the valves to stay open, No compression, And it sounded really bad.
So after learning how to adjust them correctly, I wanted to turn the motor over a little to hear what it sounded like.
After I turned it over a few times, My friend started yelling at Me to stop.
I had the fuel lines disconnected from the manifold and the distributor cap laying next to the fuel line, ( coil wire still attached )
As it turns out, The sparks from the cap were only 4" from the fuel spill.
I thank My lucky stars it didn't catch fire.
Now that My friends is being an IDIOT.
If You look just behind the cap You can see one of the fuel lines.

About 5 years ago I filled the Charger up with Diesel Fuel. I was having an already bad day whipped into the Gas Station and up to an Island and started pumping. When it was full I saw it foam at the top and I said,"%**#*%%" or something to that affect. I just called the lowback and had the tank drained. An hour later I was on the road. A bright side to the story is at the back of the shop was a Green 70 GTX getting a full Resto. The guys cranked it up to let me hear it.

I did that when I used to be a lubetech at Pepboys back in my highschool days. changed oil on a ford aerostar. Pulled it all the way around the building and parked it in front. Walked behind and looked down.... OH SHIT!
Ran it back into the shop, cleaned up the mess and found my mistake. NEVER DID THAT AGAIN!

My friend did that changing the oil on the Chally. Called me up, yelling I bought the wrong filter.  And there was fresh oil all over the garage floor. Then he pulled the old filter out of the drain pan.
