How to "fine tune" a 727?

After a lot of problems with local tranny shops, I decided last year to buy a new tranny from CRT (Cope Racing Transmissions).  It has a few thousand miles on it now with no real problems.  I would, however like the shifts to be a little firmer than they are and it also has an annoying clunk on the 2-3 shift if just cruising along in traffic.  There is no clunking sound if the car is under some power and it shifts fine.  This tranny is not built for full on racing, but as I recall it has a Transgo 2 shift kit, a bolt in sprag and some upgraded internals from a stock unit.  The converter is a Turbo Action 10" tight street unit that stalls around 3300.  Are there any adjustments that I could try over the winter, without pulling it out of the car?   Thanks,  Bob

Mine is the exact same way. It only clunks if I have to let off of it right at the shift.
If your wheels ain't spinn'n you ain't got no traction.

The clunk on the light throttle 2-3 upshift is caused by excessive overlap, the front clutch applies before the kickdown band fully releases. This is fairly common with shift kits because they are perfected for full throttle shifting and lighter throttle performance suffers a little because of it.

If the full TF-2 kit was installed there is already an orifice restrictor in the front clutch port to delay the clutch engagement, this can be changed to a smaller size and requires only removing the valve body but a smaller orifice might cause other problems so I'd leave it as is and live with the clunk or pull it down into "2" to prevent the 2-3 upshift in traffic.

Thanks John!  I've pretty much learned to live with it by holding it in second, as you suggest or giving it more gas at the shift point if I'm not right on somebody's tail.  Is there a pressure adjustment or something that can firm up the shifts a little?  I've has a TF2 before and it would easily chirp the tires going into second.  This one doesn't and seems kind of soft compared to what it was before, even though I'm making 60 rwhp more now than then.  It's a higher stall converter than before also.  Bob

Chirping tires is a poor way to judge a transmission's performance, the higher stall converter will often cushion the shift's effect on the drivetrain.
