why do "we", as in us... always do a RIP for famous people?

Do not mean to sound totally unsympathetic or crass, but take the Patrick Swayze post for example.  he was just an actor.  i just dont get the idolizing of a recently deceased actor as being a huge, saddened event in which we talk/post of him like we knew him.  Remembering his movies would be a rebuttal that many would come up with.  But is that really him? He was just playing a role in a film.  It wasnt really his personality we were viewing, but rather the character he was portraying. Heck, he could have been a mean, condescending jerkwad for all we know.

Sad that anyone has to go due to the Big C, but if we are going to glorify every single popular or famous person that has died, I will start posting every single obituary from my local newspaper to see how many responses we get.  They are people, they have died, should they not receive the same saddened response?  Granted, they may not have done a huge movie in which they could have profited millions of dollars from the people who have gone to watch it, but still... I am sure they have impacted thousands of people's lives in some fashion.  Should not this impact deserve recognition, or would we get tired of seeing these obituaries on this site due to their repetitive and depressing nature?  (really, I am not going to do it, it was rhetorical).

It's the "Cult of Personality" and I blame tv shows like "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" or "Entertainment Tonight" and magazines like "People".  When someone like Paris Hilton can be famous for absolutely nothing at all, well, it's just a sad part of our alleged culture.

It's just a way for people to connect with each other. Not much time and effort is usually devoted to it when it does happen but I think people just like to share similar things they have in common and this is a good format to do that.

Yeah, I guess when I respond to such news of a celebrity type, I just say, wow bummer...then I move on.  A RIP for some of my favorite actors is kinda like me giving my condolences on it, but I don't lose any sleep when they die cause I didn't know them personally.

Oh and yea people being sad about celebrity deaths is pretty stupid... unless you know the person who the hell cares.  When really good people in our society die that actually tried to help people and not make big bucks they get maybe a page in the back of the local paper and a half decent funeral.  When a celebrity dies they get 70 magazines with their faces on the cover millions of people congregating at their local "throw you shit on the side walk and light a few remembrance candles gatherings"  Weeks and weeks of continuous news coverage(in the case of wacko jacko) pretty much just because they were good at making money not even really anything that changed anyones life.  So here's two more cents... now go find 96 more I'm with you on this one because I know I'm going to be just as irritated when theres 70 more mags with Lindsay Lohans face is on the cover cause she overdosed on coke.

I don't see anything wrong with it. If you or any of the regulars on here died I'm sure someone would post a RIP thread about it. It's just a show of respect for their accomplishments in life and Patrick Swayze rated right up there for what he accomplished. As far as he was "just playing a role in a film" I see it a little different. Imagine if PeeWee Herman had played in Road House, Sure he could have learned the lines but I just don't think it would have had the same effect.

I agree with you.  It feels there's almost a rush among some to post an RIP thread immediately following someone's death or other newsworthy event.  I seem to recall like 4 threads within hours of Michael Jackson's death.   Don't most members periodically check CNN or the news sits can therefore learn of celebrity deaths that way, rather than via DC.com??  I guess there's an unmet "look at me" need that such threads fulfill for those that post them.

Regarding Swayze's demise yesterday, I was more more by the dreadful cause of his death and reflected about those that pancreatic cancer have already taken & those that are currently afflicted.  In our hobby, for example.
That's such a shame.

 I don't see why your all upset and so sensitive about it... I went to two funerals this week one yesterday and one this morning which i just got back from... I'm not gonna make a post about it,.. cause you don't care no matter how close I was to the these fine folks who I will miss,.. that makes three this yr.
But I wont ignore a post about a celebrity, these people touch millions of folks' lives.
  I saw Jim Carroll three times have his records and think his lyrics are particularly on target. Jim meant more to me Personally then Patrick but I liked his films, thought he did a great job in Donnie Darko one of my favorite films BTW...

K. west is a current Fav. on the R&B playlist has been for a few years now, he tends to be pretty popular and gets a fair share of awards at these Corporate Award shows like on MTV and BET and such, he's also fond of drinking and ruining the shows with his "sometimes" innapropriate behavior, I think of him as a simple bully with a drinking problem who never recived a spanking from his dad for thugish behavior, he ruined another award show night before last going on stage a grabbing the mic. from a young gal who won her first award because his choice didn't win. first, i am not upset.. i was putting forth a question/statement.  upset is me not saying anything because i think someone is full of shit and they are not worth the time of a rebuttal post.

secondly, for you to assume that i wouldnt care that you are personally hurting by attending funerals of friends of yours (since i have known you for about 6 years now) is not true.  I can truly empathize with you and would be more than willing to offer a prayer for you (just like i did for swayze's family believe it or not).  never assume mate, especially with me.

i am just saying a actor is a ACTOR.  We know only the characters they have played, not truly who they are.  so for us to do vigils and idolize these people is just ludicrous in my eyes.  I am not saying that you are wrong for feeling what you feel, i just dont get it and I never have.  Sorry, just dont feel it like you do.

its not just this post and I am not so put out by people posting, I just truly do not "get" why people find it necessary to promote a minor form of idolatry to a person we have never known.  Call it a weird curiousity that has piqued my interest.  In many ways I am a very unsympathetic SOB, so I guess that is partially why I dont understand our forum based "wake" threads in regards to these people.

Personally, I find many actors as nothing but drama ridden, attention whores (I mean they have to be in order to be in front of a camera, I understand that job requirement).  So, part of my disdain for their public "its all about me" behavior spurs my question as to why we find it acceptable for attention whores to be glorified and pasted into history books when we, ourselves (and I am stretching it by speaking for others I know), despise f'in attention whores when they are around us. I guess unless you are one, then you would be pissed if "one" was around you getting all your attention.  Whereas I get pissed just because they require huge amounts of attention like a OCD 3 mos old puppy chasing a fricken ball.
