Here's an engine for you!
Ken

Me contacting the owner:

Hello! The following is a reply to your "5.7l Hemi V8" Ad on Kijiji:

Robin (me):
Did you get your pizza yet?

Kris:
Not yet, and the engine is still sitting here.

Robin:
I'm assuming it's out of a Dodge Ram? Does it have a transmission?
I'm actually looking for one of these engines!
Was it the valve spring being broken that caused it to be removed from it's vehicle?

Kris:
Ram 1500 yes.  No transmission, the truck is back on the road with a new engine.
And yes, it was pulled because of the number of KM on it, and the valve spring.  It did run, but we weren't sure if there was any internal damage, and it was cheaper to replace it at the time.
I didn't take it apart any more after finding the broken spring.

Robin:
So.....what kind of pizza?

Kris:
I just looked back at the papers, its actually from an '03.  Either way, its not doing me any good here.
I just stuck the pizza thing in there to be funny and so that I wasn't just giving it away.  Seriously, any large/works or meat lovers would be fine.
If you really want this thing, make sure you have some way to transport it, I don't, but I do have a way to lift it in to a truck.

Robin:
Okay...save it for me. I've got a truck, but it'll be a few days before I can move it. Is that alright?
I'll definately do the pizza thing.

Kris:
Yeah thats fine, its been sitting here since November or so, a few more days won't make any difference.
Any idea when it might be so that I can arrange to be home?

Robin:
Well, I'll have my truck back in the city next week, after the long weekend, so I guess that's the timeline.
By the way, when the valvespring broke, I'm assuming it dropped the valve, and the cylinder is trashed? Would that be an accurate assumption?
And, can I get a look at the engine?
Thanks

Kris:
I didn't pull the head so I can't say if there is any internal damage, but it would be a safe assumption.
The valve does move in the guide though, so I doubt its terrible.  Like I said, I have no idea for sure though.
As far as time goes, I really don't care when, I just need to arrange to be home.
I work nights, but not every night so as long as I know, its not a huge issue.
And sure, you can look at it - do you want pics, or just to see it before you pick it up?  Either way its no problem.

Robin:(A week later)
Kris, I have my truck ready and waiting for your go-ahead to pickup the engine.
I work 7:30 to 4pm daily, and should be avaliable every evening and this upcoming weekend too.

And it's a large meat-lovers pizza....!

Kris:
Hey, sorry, I got stuck working double shifts for the last few days.
That's coming to an end as of Thursday, so, anytime Thursday evening, through till Monday evening is fine with me.
Just let me know first and I can be home.
If you want to call, my # is XXX-XXXX
I work nights, so it doesn't matter how late you call, just not terribly early if you don't mind, I often don't know my own name prior to about 1pm.

Robin:
Sounds good. I usually go to the cruise at the A&W in Dartmouth on Thursday...so maybe after supper on that night?

Kris:
I can make that work.  I keep meaning to go to the cruise, but never seem to make it, other things crop up constantly.
But yeah, that's fine.

Robin:
Okay Kris...I can drop off a pizza at your house in time for supper if you'd like!
I can be there at say 5:30.
Now I need your address.

Kris:
That'll work.  :)

XXX Bedford Highway.  I'm right at the intersection of XXXXXX Road and Bedford Highway, between the Irving and Chinatown.  Blue house, I'll be outside.  There will be a few vehicles there, but I'll try to get them moved out of the way.
If you get lost, call me.

Epilogue:

Needless to say...I picked up a 5.7 Hemi tonight. Cost: one large meat lovers pizza.
It doesn't have an intake, but does have the airbox....go figure.
And one valvecover is missing.
Lots of oxidization on the aluminum, but no pitting. One broken valve spring, but valve still slides.
I'm pulling the head on Saturday.

Maybe the deal of the summer? :scratchchin:
Maybe not.

I'm very happy with this latest acquisition.
If the head is pooched, my friend Kori has told me that he has a new one, so that will alieviate that problem.
My brother put chrome valvecovers on the 5.7 in his 2004 Ram, so he has a spare set he'll give me.
The fuel rails and the intake are buried in that garage, and the seller emailed me this morning to tell me that he is digging them out.
My plan: to put this engine in this:

Hip hop gangstas!

Actually, most of those dudes were brothers living in the apartment upstairs. We corralled them as we figured if we couldn't get the cherry picker close to the truck, we'd get them to help lift it into the bed. As it turned out, they probably just helped eat the pizza!
Which BTW was a large Pizza Hut meat lovers pizza....smelled great!! But I can't eat pizza - lactose intolerant! :flame:

The results of today's teardown:
One severely bent valve, a scored piston, and a valve guide that's injured.

On the upside, the cylinder looks good!

Now, I'm looking at the cost of getting a guide installed, new valvesprings, and a valve.
The piston should be replaced too, which is probably the biggest expense. The rest of the cylinders don't even have a ridge, so maybe I'm looking at just the one piston and rings?

buy the 6.1 heads and intake

$$$$ :scratchchin:

Go on some of the forums for the LX cars or the newer trucks. They can give you good leads on vendors that may be reasonable or someone might just have what you're looking for for a very cheap price.
