These are some pictures of my dads car that my wife recently scanned for me.

A little background:

car was a 1969 GTX, numbers matching, 426 HEMI, silver on black, black interior, 4 speed, Dana, Airgrabber hood, black vinyl top.

Dad was racing a 400 BB charger (he was 17) and got airborne going over a bridge over Brays Bayou in Houston where he grew up.  Estimated speed at "touch down" was 135 mph.  Dad lost control and went approx. 200 yards through small trees and backyard fences until he came to a stop.  The only reason he survived was because he WAS NOT wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the car, believe it or not.

And now, if you made it this far, to make you feel better......

This is the car he bought about 2 years later, and still has it.....until I steal it from him  :D

Not numbers matching, but it's a 1967 GTX, 426 HEMI, 4 speed, Dana, and the car I learned to drive a stick in....I love this car.....

:o  OHH MY GOD!!  I would love to say that will buff right out..... but  :pity:

And that is precisely why when I was a lad of 17 and could have scored a super clean 4 speed 68 Hemi GTX for the princely sum of 800 bucks, my Dad said "NFW!!!!!"

WOW!!!

It's amazing that he lived, looking at those pictures of that mangled wreck.

Honestly, it reminds me of a '74 Barracuda I had. I did a similar sort of regrettable maneuver and wiped it out, along with my nose, at about 95 miles per hour at the age of roughly 19 or 20. Fortunately no one else was hurt!

My '71 Charger I've had ever since then, bought as my next car using money from scrapping out my Barracuda, gets driven much, much more carefully - sort of like your father's second GTX.

I agree with the other posters - some vintage pictures of the new GTX in action, towing trailers, etc... Love those sort of pictures.

Damn, you're lucky to have ever been born after that one.

At least the car died with its boots on.  Lots of others rotted away in a field because the owner was "gonna fix it up someday."

he won.....until he lost  ;D  I asked him to elaborate a little about the race and he said that he was messing with the guy and they were running about 120 and he saw the bridge coming up and there was a curve after the bridge so he got in it (because he could) and passed the charger.....he had done 120 over that bridge many times before, but apparently that extra 15 mph was enough for some air time.....

the Hemi was sold to someone who spotted the GTX in the salvage yard....he waited 6 months before contacting grandpa about it because he was sure someone died in the car....I think it was around 1979 or so.....if anyone might know of where the motor wound up I'd like to know.....
