Is $500 for a running 318 WITH the trans a good offer?

Or is it too much? They're both out of a running Ramcharger.

i would think that's a decent price.....how many miles on the engine/trans?  does the engine smoke?  transmission operate normal?

70-80,000 miles (can't remember the exact amount), no smoke, trans shifts fine.  Out of a 86-89 RamCharger.

if you're after 318 then i guess its fine. To me it's worthless, I dont even have another car to put it in. I'd probably take 383-400 for that much

I think 500 for a 318 and tranny is too high especially with that many miles. I see them on craigslist, all the time cheaper than that, usually 200-300 bucks sometimes even cheaper. Heck I bought a complete running driving 76 Aspen with a 318/904 for 200 bucks, a few years back.

I consider every motor a core until I see the leakdown and/or compression test results. I've been burned by the old "ran when pulled" line once and it won't happen again. Even when you can hear them run it's a crapshoot. I bought a running IH 345 for a Scout and it sounded great... at an idle. I bought it and installed it and once it got up to about 2000 rpms it sounded like a tin can full of marbles.

would a 360 give me decent gas mileage? and I'd still have to change the trans and all that other stuff since it's a small block...is it easy to find a small block 727 trans that wouldn't need a overhaul?

I'm only doing this because it's my daily driver and have to travel back and forth to school 3 times a week-(about 30 minutes back and forth/55 miles a day) I love the 400 in it right now, it's mean, it's been upgraded by the last owners and it's a blast, I don't know all the gritty details about what they did exactly (sorry, I'm a bit retarded when it comes to the mechanical stuff, still learning) but by far destroys the 400 I had in my '73. Not ideal for daily driving but I don't plan to get rid of it either.

with the '73, I'd say I got 2 trips and a half/200 miles before needing fuel. with this one, I haven't had enough time to test it right but it's about 140-160.

when i had the 360 in my '73 it was pushing almost 400 horse and I drove the car from houston to dallas on 3/4 of a tank......that's with a 2.73 rear end though....

I would use a 904 regardless on SB size. The 904 has a 2.77 first gear the 727 has a 2.45. Plus the 904 uses less power and doesn't weigh as much.

I say too much, and aren't all Ramchargers 4X4?  You can't use that trans.
