What is the car you always wanted as a teen and now have no desire to ever own?

Sorry young guns this question won't apply much to you but for some of the older people on here, is there a car you always thought you wanted some day when you were younger and now you just think there is no way I would want one?
For me personally it's the Countach.  I thought they were great until I drove one, now it would be one of the last cars I would ever want to own.

Charger440RDN

For me it would have to be the Trans-Am from Knight Rider I was sure it was the coolest car in the world when I was 9 years old round about 1985  :D  Now there is no way in hell I would want that piece of crap, or even want to be seen in one.   Of course the General Lee was my first favorite TV car and I still love Chargers, go figure  :shruggy:

Go Hogs Go

96-97 blue/white Viper GTS. This car was my dream car in junior high, and has turned out to be my Elanor. Every time I tried to buy one something didn't work out. I finally landed one in May of this year, was driving it on the 4th of July when a pop up shower came up, hydro plained doing 50 mph on a overpass, backed it into a bridge rail, spun across the median and almost went into the other lane of traffic. That 1 of 900 car got totalled and almost took me out with it. I don't care if I ever see another one.

The Countach was always one of my favorites too.

Of course I know I'll never get or drive one, but I remember a funny story involving my Satellite convertible & cutting one off in traffic.   I was in the middle lane of a 3 lane highway (Rte. 17 in Paramus, NJ) & changed lanes to pass a slower car. I looked in my mirror, saw nothing & then moved to the left lane. Once I was in the left lane, I suddenly noticed just the roof line of a Countach that was right on my rear bumper that had come from out of nowhere.  :o  This guy had to have been really flying to get on my tail that quickly. I don't care if the car can handle well, but in a congested area during rush hour, you're an idiot to drive like that.

The car that I truly did think I'd own one day was simply a wing car. It could've been either a Superbird or a Daytona & wouldn't matter to me. I've liked both ever since I learned what they were as a kid. When I was old enough to drive & get my own car, they were always priced just a little too high to get one. If I had $1500 to spend, the winged cars were double that price. When I was older & the prices leveled off on them, I had just bought my house & couldn't even snag a clean, slant 6, 4 door Dart. By the time I had money to spend on a car, the winged cars were the same price I paid for my house.  ::)

I don't care how much I like, or how much I want a real winged car, there's no way I can spend an insane amount of money on a car that's basically just a toy.

Some intersting answers.  I wasn't thinking of ones you wanted but not thought unattainable so much as ones that you wanted but now wouldn't want even if you hit the lottery.

Mike DC

I think just about any of the big-time 80s exotics are in this category for me.  Contaches, DeLoreans, F40s, etc.  The exclusivity never appealed to me much, but the looks and performance did.

Looking at them now, none of them seem like a huge improvement over just messing with a cheap mid-engined fiberglass kit car.

And all of the above would probably get smoked by a 10yo used Corvette in current real world conditions.

I just have a hard time picturing myself as a Corvette owner.  Principle of the thing.

When I was about 5 yrs old our neighbor had a new '71 440 "Cuda, purple with white billboards.
I would sit on my bigwheel and watch him wash it every Saturday, when he got done he would fire it up and idle out of the driveway and then bark the tires as he left.
I always wanted one since and still do but the Chargers are more affordable.

I brought that up to my Mom one day and she told me that it wasn't long after that and he got that car repo'd.

Troy

I used to also absolutely love the shape of the 68-82 Corvettes. I had tons of How Wheels of them. I got to ride in an 82 a couple of summers ago and hated it. The shape is still cool but I have no desire to own one. Ditto on the Countach, Bricklin, DeLorean, Testarossa, and just about any other 80s exotic. When I was a kid my three favorite TV shows were BJ and the Bear, Fall Guy, Dukes of Hazzard and Magnum PI. I knew I was gonna be a trucker some day. Things change so I don't see me ever owning a Kenworth (or a monkey) and those old Chevy trucks sure are basic (and everywhere you look). Still love the Charger of course!

I'd still take one. Thats not a car thats exactly known for safety anyway. Good thing your ok.
That Viper was on the top of my list for years. Also the Mclaren F1. Watched a topgear video about one and realized all the problems and maint. I would never be worth it. Also a charger but I have one now.

bull

I awlays wanted a 68-70 Charger and that feeling has not gone away but I too wanted an 80s vintage Countach for the longest time and I still have never seen one in person. But after looking at several exotic cars up close I can see how much of a PITA they would be. Not to mention all the hassle and expense of working on a mid-engine car that you can't get parts for.

Other than that the list of cars I wanted has always been Mopar or IH Scout although most of the Mopars I've gotten over wanting were of the Mitsu variety. For the longest time I wanted a 90-93 Daytona but now I don't think I'd take one for free. Also I wanted a Dodge Raider and a D50 pickup but now I wouldn't take a second glance at them. Last on my list was a Dodge Stealth and I think I'd still grab one of those if I could get away with it cheap enough. I still think they look pretty good even though they're a little too ricer/Supra looking.

Landonsrt

I wanted an 80's trans am because of Knight Rider also. Then my cousin came to visit and he had an 85 or so RS Camaro. After that, um NO!

Blown70

I have most of what I want.

only missing 70 or 71 'cuda or barracuda.

Have the 69 Charger and Bonus 70 Charger..... (although the 70 is heavly modified.)

The other car I wanted when I saw them was the 98-02 firebird, trans Am WS6 convertible.... and I have that too.

I did back in the day love the exotics like everyone sounds like, but they to me have no interest to own, maintain.

Tom

beware the sleeper

yeah im only 26, but ive wanted a third gen charger my entire life, soon as possible i am making that happen.  The only other car I ever really wanted was an el camino, with a dropped in big block of course, I kind of soured on that though just the more i played one or the other.

mikepmcs

Always wanted the ZZ TOP Ford Coupel. The one in a in all the videos.  Now........YUP! I STILL WANT THAT DAMN CAR!

Also a Porsche 911 930 for some reason i've always wanted one of those as well but since I only own american I don't see it happening in the near future, who knows.

Troy - How about the two blonde twins from BJ + the bear ?   1 dollar $ per mile wherever you want the load brought to.

Myself, probably the Pantera - although when i test drove one in about 2001, it was red, too common a color, and slower than I pictured. It might have helped if we didn't go on a heavy acceleration run with the parking brake engaged....   :-\ .  Now I have a rig that'll spank the Pantera in acceleration and handling, but there's just something about the shape and the 351 Cleveland in the back of the Pantera. I'll just have to deal with the Cobra-jet in my plain ol Ranchero.

Hmmm - I thought the 427 Cobra was bad-ass as all hell (and it was/is), too much coin to spend to own one now otherwise I still want one bad. The 63-67 Sting Ray body style always turned my crank. I will never forget the ad for the '70 SS Chevelle - That was wood material. Of course many Mopars were on my wish list as well but the 3 above were my earliest recollections of car lust up to my early, early teens.

I had always wanted an 82-86 chevy short bed truck as a teenager. Almost bought one when I graduated from high school in 2000. Not sure what the fascination was. Definately not interested in owning one today.

Wow, where do I start:

I always wanted an 87 grand national or a 92-96 RX-7. But I'm over them.

Still would buy a viper (2002-2005)....I'll have to drive one into the guard rail myself before I get over that dream.

I like those old cars. I've had a 64 Galaxie 500 and completely redone this 62 Galaxie for my boss and then bought it from him 4 years later for $1200.  :o

Absolutely no bondo in this car. I had rebuilt the 352 engine, new front end and brakes all around and repainted it. He took it after I did all that and had a new upholstery put in it. He found a 51 Mercury he wanted and needed $1200 more to get it so he sold this to me for that. Not many of them had the fender skirts.

As far as any cars I ever wanted as a teen, I think the only one that I wanted and haven't ever had was a 73 Mach 1 and a 68 442 convertible but any other ones that I wanted, I've bought. A good friend of mine had a 70 Charger R/T 440-6 that he wanted to trade me, but I decided not to because at that time I had a pretty heavy foot and knew that one would have killed me. He ended up putting it into a tree.

69_500

Well lets see here this one is easy. Every since I was probably 2-3 years old I have said I would have a 1969 charger 500, and a 1969 Dodge Daytona. Got one, but the odds of getting the other one aren't completely ruled out but aren't likely. There is no way to have both at the same time when you are a delivery truck driver, but then again the one I have is pretty nice, but still not a Daytona.

As far as other exotics, well I wasn't into any of them really. I do appreciate the Shelby A/C Cobra's but you see way too many of the kit cars for me now, and I have to admit that I like the 1969 Boss 429 Mustangs as well, but then again it has to do with there being one in the driveway when I was 2-3. Same time frame that there was 2 C500's and 4 Daytona's and 2 Superbirds in the same yard/driveway.

When I was 5 or so I begged my old man to buy a Subaru Brat. I thought they were the coolest thing ever! (Ah, the folly of youthful ignorance... siiiigh...) When I was a little kid, I desperately wanted a Volkswagen Beetle. All of my uncles drove them. They were everywhere! My second pedal car was a plastic Beetle convertible, bought from a Volkswagen dealership. It didn't take long to wear that out!

When I was around 10 or so, the Waltons and the Beachcombers were on TV, and on the big screen, Bonnie and Clyde, The Sting and other depression era movies, which got me completely hooked on the Model A Ford.
In fact, my grandfather bought a 1929 Tudor just before the depression hit, and he lost his business (but kept the car).
It was long gone by the time I was born.

In my early teens, the "Old Car Review" magazine was out, and there was an article on the AC Cobra which turned me completely around. I had to have a Cobra - even though I'd never seen one in real life. OK, there was one in the "Cannonball run". Instead, when I was 14, I bought an MGA roadster, but unluckily, it was vandalized (burned) before I could pick it up.
Yes, I got my money back.
I sent away for and received the Arntz Cobra brochure - which I still have.

After that, I got turned onto Musclecars....and Mopars in general, and my focus turned to the Daytona Charger, Plymouth Superbird, the AAR Cuda and anything with a 426 Hemi. I still kick my ass for not buying that $1500 Superbird when I was 19.

Well....actually.....the DOH is what got me into cars in the first place, so really as far as a childhood dream car....I have it......but as far as wanting a car then that I know now I would never even fathom the idea......It was a '69  (I think) Buick Riviera.  don't hold me to the year, but I think that's what it was.

wanted as a teen but have no desire to own?    Corvette.    :Twocents:

wanted as a teen and did own.
1) 69 Chevelle - my brother crashed that one, he said he "swerved for a deer" and put it in the ditch.  ya right.
2) 55 Chevy - had one for 8 years, traded it for my '69 500
3) 69 Charger R/T.  Sold the C500 to buy this and its my baby!  :yesnod:

next on the list
4) late 20's or early 30's Dodge.  looking for a 1 or 1-1/2 ton pickup to put a cummings 4bt into.   :callme:

A 1967 Chevelle SS 427 4 speed. They were factory special order but not Yenko's. There were 2 around the peninsula south of SF when I was a teen. They leaked a little oil like all 427's but they were feared and were scary fast.

Instead, when I was 14, I bought an MGA roadster, but unluckily, it was vandalized (burned) before I could pick it up.

LOL! My High School English teacher had an MGA he roadraced (years before) that I couldn't talk him out of...the price was always too high. I think he kept it that way intentionally...I guess I'd still take one if it was nice, drivable and free but not if it needed any work. My first car ended up being a '66 MGB, which totally blew want for MGA out the window. I liked the MG but I broke every piece of driveline except the motor.

What I did want, and still do, is a '40 Ford Coupe, in Dark Green. My Dad had one in the yard when I was very young, but it disappeared when I was maybe 5. But I don't see many of those lying around in my price range.

A late 80's Ferrari Testarossa. The kind of car in Miami Vice. Then I found out the car in that show was really a C3 Corvette with a body kit.

I thought in Miami Vice he had a Ferrari Daytona?
Later on in the show it was a Testarossa. I don't remember the details.

  Cars

The Ferrari Testarossa as seen in the series finale, "Freefall".Main article: Cars in Miami Vice
Two automobiles became very noteworthy during Miami Vice; the Ferrari Daytona and Testarossa. During the first two seasons and two episodes of the third season, Detective Sonny Crockett drove a black 1972 Ferrari Daytona Spyder 365 GTS/4.[35] Actually, the car was not a Ferrari, but a kit replica based on a 1980 Chevrolet Corvette C3 chassis.[36] The car was fitted with Ferrari-shaped body panels by specialty car manufacturer McBurnie.[37] Once the car gained notoriety, Enzo Ferrari filed a lawsuit demanding that McBurnie and others cease producing and selling Ferrari replicas, because they were taking his name and styling.[36] As a result, the vehicle lasted until season 3, at which point it was blown to pieces in the season three premiere episode, "When Irish Eyes Are Crying".[35][37] The fake Ferraris were removed from the show, with Enzo Ferrari donating two brand new 1986 Testarossas as replacements.[38]

While Miami Vice did receive two new Ferraris, it also used a third Testarossa look-alike, which was the stunt car.[38] Carl Roberts, who had previously worked on the Daytona kitcars, offered to build the stunt car.[38] Roberts decided to use 1972 De Tomaso Pantera, which had the same wheelbase as the Testarossa and thus was perfect for the body pieces.[37][38] The vehicle was modified to withstand daily usage on-set, and continued to be driven until the series ended.[38]

Crockett's partner, Ricardo Tubbs, drives a 1964 Cadillac Coupe de Ville Convertible.[37][39][40] Stan Switek drove a turquoise 1963 Ford Thunderbird.[37] Gina Calabrese drove an 1971 Mercury Cougar XR-7 convertible.[citation needed] When Stan and Larry were undercover, they drove a Dodge Ram Van.[41][42] Other notable vehicles that appeared in Miami Vice included, brands such as Lamborghini,[42] AMG Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Maserati, Lotus, DeLorean, Porsche, and Corvettes.[42] American muscle cars, such as the GTO, Trans Am, Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro, or a Plymouth Barracuda also made appearances.[37][42]

They had one of the older "Vice" Ferraris on display at Universal a couple years ago.  I noticed that it was rollcaged.
