my buddy JONH who has a 66 BARRACUDA and a 68 NEWPORT vert took his 1-2 year old HHR to PEP BOYS to get tires , as the were changing the tire they broke to wheel studs , they told JOHN they had to order the studs and they would not be in till the next day , so he had to leave his HHR at the shop . latter that day they call JOHN and tell him they have to order all five wheel studs from GM and since the only broke 2 studs JOHN has to pay for the other 3 .

really that is just friggn INSANE . i just wonder how many people they get over on doing this crap . JOHNs mother asked me to please go up to PBs with him today coz she is affriad he will end up in jail , so im waiting for him to call . i really want to go up there and hear thier insane reason why he should pay for something they broke . :smilielol:

thats rediculous. Then again, I had to fight for a month and a half to get a tires plus to pay for the new driveshaft I needed for my bronco when their monkey broke the ear off the shaft. That one damn near went to court. Just stay strong and make sure that they know your buddy will NOT be paying for anything on that repair, period. if they continue, maybe it was vandalized by the guys at pep boys........

That left & right hand thread thing on old Mopars is hopeless.

I don't even try to get the message across to the guys at shop counter anymore.  I just demand to stand there and watch the mechanic spin the air wrench myself when they take the wheels off.  Nothing less will satisfy me that they aren't screwing it up.

Even if you convert the car to all normal threads, there's no telling if you might get a guy who actually does know old Mopars and screws it up anyway.

I don't trust repair shops period. I try to do everything myself unless its really something major like trans, etc

Them dumbasses would not get my money. I would tell them to take it off the bill or tell me what they want me to break on their car. Morons!!!! :RantExplode:

The car he took to the shop was an HHR - not a Mopar. Should have been no confusion about the threads.

Cooter

I'm not taking any sides here, or defending anybody..All I can tell you is as a mechanic who's been working on cars for over 15 years professionally, I can say that while someone at another shop installs the lug nuts too tight and stretches the threads on the studs, it makes them almost impossible to remove when they "lock up" coming off....The only recourse is to Break them....I ALWAYS grease the threads when the lug buts are hard coming off....

I'm not saying Pep Boys are correct in the way they handled the "Gotta buy all 5 nuts", but the two that broke probably locked up from stretched threads on the studs themselves...While I too have run into the dreaded "Locked up" studs that break off coming off, If there is ever a problem with the customer that thinks they shouldn't have to pay, then we usually just eat it to keep up good customer relations....Just an opinion....

Im with cooter on this.

Its possible that the damage was done or had to be done to get the wheels off.

And really its not their fault.

HOWEVER if I was the shop owner I would have refused to do the work. Or told the car owner it was going to happen
or just eat the cost.

But Im not.
Its a huge chain. The chain could give a rats ass and kid behind the counter has already forgot about it.

So in the end I blame me, you and everybody that goes to the big stores for the best price.

LOL rant over.

i turns out it was his 66 BARRACUDA they broke the lugs on , his mother told me it was his HHR but she is dealing with alot right now so i guess she got mixxed up on the cars . anyway what happened was JOHN took his 66 up to PBs on monday to get new tires put on his cragar S/Ss after it was done they told him to check the lugs after a while to be sure they were tight because they are unilug .  :shruggy: well he drove the car home less than a mile , put the lug wrench on and started to tighted the lugs and one fell right off . so he took the car back up to show them and they put the air to the lugs and broke another stud  :rotz:

they ended up paying for ten new right handed thred lugs and put them on for free , but only after 4 days of fighting with them .

Well, that makes more sense then. Glad he got it all worked out. Did he happen to keep the left hand studs? Someone else could probably use them (if they aren't mangled).

should have taken the rims off himself and dropped them off at the tire shop.  I would never leave my baby with any sort of chain store monkeys.
