OBD II code P0731

I know what the manual for the code reader says but it's a little vague.  It's a 2000 Caravan with automatic overdrive.  It was beginning to get stiff tomove the gear change lever and then a few times even though the lever was in the correct position, it wouldn't come up as "PARK" on the indicator.  It would stop at reverse and even thought the van seemed to be in park, it wouldn't start until the shifter was jiggled enough to get it to indicate Park.  The it began an intermittent harsh downshift on decelleration followed immediately by going into limp home mode.
So do any of those sypmtoms combined with code PO731 point to something obvious (and cheap )?

That code translates to "gear 1 incorrect ratio" on one of the sites I was reading (but you already knew that.) I did some research online and most people getting P0731 from a Caravan found that it was the input and/or output speed sensors on the transmission. From what I found this is pretty common, and the sensors are not much money and easy to replace.

Just so I'm clear on this...
One of the symptoms I have NOT noticed is a failing speedo, would it stand to reason that an input sensor could fail and affect trans operation without messing up the output signal to the speedo head?

The output sensor is for the speedo...not to be confused with the input sensor...two completely different sensors

Well yes, I gathered that but I still needed to know if the input one had any effect on speedo operation.  In any event, the local Dodge parts guy let me have them at jobber cost and for that price I just went ahead and changed them both.  Everything is working fine now.
