beware the sleeper

Hey I have the car and got it in the back, I just did a quick walk around video of the body and its condition, I was wondering if it was cool to start a thread here, I saw some road runners snuck in, and few other mopars, figured it might be ok, I am just trying to clear it before I post anything.  Just figured if anyone was gonna be able to help me it would be you guys, I have been stalking here for a loooong time, and some of you are scary smart at this type of thing.

I don't think a Coronet restoration thread in a "Charger Disscussion" only section would be wise?
Just list it under Car guys discussion like the other non chargers.  :Twocents:
I'm sure the guys here would love to help you out, but starting out in the correct section would be wise.

O.K, am I losing my mind?  Wasn't this thread in the Charger Section when I first responded?  I went back to see if anyone else commented and couldn't find it?  I don't get it because if a Moderator moved it, it would say moved. WHATS HAPPENING TO ME? :coocoo:
You're fine right here.  Start posting. :icon_smile_big:

haha magic maybe, yeah, I will update with the walk around video, if anyone wants me to shoot anything specific, or crawl up in there or anything, just holler it out and I will do it.  I know the clear coating was done wrong, theres rust creeping on it from sitting in the field, the back end is looking pretty chewed too, I am gonna have to do this pay check by pay check, but its weird, I have a really strong connection with the car for some reason, and I have decided to try and restore it to the best of my ability.  I have some tear down manuals, the car is in my back yard, the grass is being killed where it is at, and I am actually going to paver stone the area for a platform to work on, from there I am open to suggestions on how and where to start.  The car starts fine (drove it about 6 miles home), but it handles like a boat, and im willing to bet it needs every fluid in it changed, I am more than willing to start at the core up, just to make sure everything is solid.  here is the initial walk around, sorry about the shakeyness, didnt wanna drag the tripod out, my shooting skills will get better rest assured.

ok so embedding doesnt work, here is the link

I was going to find a soft way to tell you that a smashed 72 4dr Coronet is not a car I would want to invest any money in.  I see your name is beware the sleeper, so if that's the idea I'm not sure what to say?  I never owned a sleeper car.  You're going to have a lot of money in that car when you're done, are you sure this 4dr is the right car for you?

Arent the 3rd Gen Chargers technically a Coronet?!

Todd

Tilar

3rd gen Chargers are nothing like the coronet. The Coronet would probably fall in line with the Satellite or the Fury.

And I gotta agree with 1969chargerrtse, Unless that car has a whole lot of sentimental value, I'd reconsider putting any money into that one. I don't think the resale value would cover much more than the cost of the paint job.

I agree....and I don't think there's any soft way to say this (coming from another Coronet owner) - I would advise you to find another one to fix up.

Just repairing that folded quarter panel alone will exceed the total cost of the car. 1972 Coronets can still be found in good shape out there.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.  :2thumbs:

W  - means Coronet/Charger   so it could be a Coronet Charger!

yeah I hear what you are saying, I dunno, maybe I can get a charger body and swap the engine and the trans mission to it.  I dunno, money is rediculously tight right now, I will figure something out.

I guess since mine is a second gen and no "W", I never connected that the two would be the same other than being a Dodge. But I still stand by the Coronet being more like a Fury or a Satellite than a Charger.  :D

I can think of 5 or 6 things worth saving off of that car:

Engine(depending on what it is),

Transmission,

Front suspension/disc brakes,

Radiator,

Rearend- if it's an 8 3/4 :scratchchin:

Maybe some little hardware stuff if I'm bored.

The rest of it would be left upside down,

On fire,

In my worst enemy's front yard,

On the day of his mother's funeral.

beware the sleeper

yeah its got a 318 with low pressure cams on it, about 45k miles, worth keeping, the disc brakes are only a year old, the transmission has 45k miles on it, the rearend is an 8 3/4 if i remember right, the big circle one, most of the mechanical work was done recently because he was just fixing it up when it got hit, so the body doesnt match whats under the hood, thats what drew me to it in the first place,  and yeah, dont think about soft ways to say stuff, if you are just being honest, just be honest, i respect that, swhy im talking this all over with you guys,  now lemme ask you, if I harvest that, what are the years I would be looking for in a charger to have the least amount of headaches, and yeah, its a coronet custom, the vin decodes as a coronet/charger

Tilar

Engine and tranny would stretch across quite a few years, I can take a look in my interchange manual and see what years the brake parts and other things will go to if you want to go that way.

I had one of those years ago. Paid $107.14 for it. *I beat the crap out of it* and still sold it for $100.00. Thats a 4 door bomber, drive it like you stole it and restore a *muscle car*.

:Twocents:
Hey, you can hate the game but don't hate the player.

1969chargerrtse

Pretty much a general rule is , no 4 drs are worth anything.  You said don't be soft, so that car is parts only, do not waste any money especially when it's tight fixing that damaged worn 4dr up.

I gotta agree. I did just that with a 66 VW that I bought in 74. It only had 30k miles on it but it had gone through 3 brothers when they were in Germany. First one bought it, Second one came in about the time the first was leaving and on to the last one that brought it home with him. I gave $300 for it. Drove the crap out of it, rolled it over on its side once, tore the clutch out of it one night turning donuts out in the hay field and still got my $300 out of it. I had more fun out of that car. My intention when I bought it was to make it a dune buggy but it didnt make it that far.

I think it's a good "learner" if you can get the rear corner jerked back down and straight for not too much money drive the heck out of it and learn as you go, don't worry about looks, it's a sleeper. Welcome...everyone's got to start somewhere look into just fixing the corner for use not looks an use it for now, you have all the parts there to up-grade a body later. These cars are tough...they can take it.  :2thumbs:

beware the sleeper

yeah, well soon as i can im gonna move on a charger body, cause you all are making a lot of sense, I was just trying to cross reference what would give me the most spare parts, I am coming up short but i dont have an interchange manual either, just some tear downs, luckily if I get a third gen, I have all the tear down manuals allready.

beware the sleeper

actually the name is from a heavily modified oldsmobile starfire I used to have, people would see the hatchback and start laughing,  I ended up giving the car to a really great guy who really needed it way back (he was studying to become a pediatrician and trying to drive three counties over for med school, and he was just one of those guys where if you compared souls, it would look like the smoker and the non smokers lungs, his dad had a garage too so last i heard it was still in really great shape.) but yeah, I wasnt trying to the coronet into a sleeper although it really is, it was more in homage to that starfire, I blew some panties off some with ricers with that thing for sure.

edit:  I figure someone was gonna ask, was a 77 gt, had a tricked out chevy 305 v-8 in it, and all the guy had was a motor cycle in hurricane season, and yes, he is now in the coast gaurd saving people from drowning every day, so i get partial credit, haha.
