Just to satisfy my own little brain, can anyone explain just why it is that the funky looking Mopar Performance fan is supposed to save up to 5hp?

No he is not asking about Castrol Synthetic oil.  Jimmy... :shruggy:

it uses a viscous fan clutch , for all intents and purposes . It's slips on harder acceleration thus letting  the fan  free wheel so to speak.
meaning less parasitic drag on the motor = more horsepower

Ghoste

The fan drive I understand but what is the need for the fan with the offset blades?  Perhaps that is the better way to phrase the quesion, there are a number of 5 blade fans they could have pulled from theparts bin, what is the advantage to the goofy looking one?

maxwellwedge

I have bought about 4 of those over the last few years just to get the clutch. I have some special studs to put in the clutch so everything looks stock and send the original clutch out for resto (it only takes 2 years!). I wouldn't put that fan on a lawn mower....maybe on a Mustang...

Yep, and now I'd like to know why it is supposed to take less power to run and why maxwellwedge hates them so much?

It just looks so darn goofy - Sorry for using these technical terms.  :icon_smile_big:

It probably works ok - I just use the clutch out of the package and re-use the 215 or 216 original, manly, not girly-boy-ish fan.

I guess it moves more air than a flex fan and weighs less than a stocker.....And it does provide a nice gap or two to tighten up the bolts with less fear of skinned knuckles.

Ghoste

  That seems to be about as good a reason as any.

mauve66

well i'm guessing it weighs less with 2 less blades on it???
