Good deal or not?

Buying a 69 charger rt/se with #'s matching 440, fender tag, build sheet, and original california title for $26,000. Car was redone 4 years ago. It is the general color that the fender tag calls for but they used a brighter shade from 1970. Car has had engine and trans rebuilt 1000 miles ago. In addition to SE it also has the front disc brakes, tinted glass, power windows, and air conditioning options. Everything works other than the original am radio. Headlight doors and all gauges work as does the air and heat. The guy has pictures and documentation of the restoration but I am still going to order an inspection. Would like an opinion on the deal assuming the car was restored to at least a very nice driver quality.

Blown70

I would never ever, buy a car sight unseen. or inspected by someone who knows mopars..... best of luck.

bull

Yea that sounds pretty decent if they did a good job on the restoration. If they did a really good job then I'd say it's a really good price. Pics would be nice though and yes, I would be real careful about buying one you haven't seen in person.

It's the little stuff that will kill you. And cost lots of dough and time to fix. :eek2:

No pictures can tell you about problems that might get big, fast: wiring all screwed up, tires rubbing, alignment issues, loose steering, vibrations, unexplainable fluid leaks, poor brakes, interior smells (smoker?), on and on. Plus it's the shortcuts that someone takes that can ruin the fun of ownership when it becomes your baby.

There have been some very good checklists posted here over time. I just couldn't find links to post at this time, but they are out there.

Could be worth 15k, or 35k, but you need to see it, exam, and drive. Hope it works out for you.

Yes: Buy a plane ticket and go see it yourself along with the inspector you decide to hire. Take a bunch of cash, a nice digital camera and a soft magnet off the fridge before you go. Oh yea, buy one of those white books by Galen and study it beforehand so you know what numbers to look for.

A plane ticket is great advice and for such a purchase really a cheap item, VERY GOOD ADVICE here.   Look at our own Pockt Thunder..... I am sure well worth the plane ticket..... Just soooooo many things could be wrong or be covered by paint......Price does sound reasonable but, again for what, what are you getting......?

Hope it works out.

However, I'll add one small exception here. The next best thing to going yourself is to ask someone you trust to go have a look at it for you There are probably plenty of people here who'd be glad to help if they're in the area of the car. I asked a couple nice guys to help me out once by looking at a car in another state for me and they took lots of pictures and were very knowledgable and helped me make an informed decision. I did the same for someone else out of state a few years ago who was interested in a '70 Charger not too far from my house.

I'll pile on in agreement with inspecting it in person too. Some people will be okay with others looking over a car for them, & I might too if it's in a certain price range, but from what you described, this one is a big expense to take a chance getting burned on. It doesn't matter if it's a great deal or not, $26,000 is a lot of money unless you're in the same tax bracket as Donald Trump. Even a simple difference of opinion on the vehicle's condition can be a huge disappointment. What's "nice" or "presentable" to one car guy, might be considered "show quality" to another. I see it all the time right here on DC.com.

If it were me in a situation like this, I'd find someone to inspect it just to make sure it exists & that it isn't a scam, or a "disappointment" car, then plan to see it myself. First discuss this with the seller, & hopefully they'll agree, that you will send a reasonable deposit, like $1000 or so, based on the inspection or the report, & pay the balance upon seeing it in person & taking possession of it. You may or may not be able to agree on the deposit being refundable, but think about how much easier it will be to live with losing $1000 instead of spending $26,000 & having to dump thousands more into it.

tan top, that is the exact one. Was painted with the 1970 yellow instead of the 69 like yours. Don't know if that matters as much as all the rare options, numbers matching, and quality of restore. They do have the pics and receipts from the resto which is about as best as I can hope for without doing it myself. When you say someone was looking at it do you mean in person or just considering it? From my research the car is at least a one out of 1521 cars that were rt se and had power windows. That is without considering the disc brakes and air conditioner options so it may be even more rare. Would welcome your thoughts if you have any more insight for this particular car.

This one?

Too bad it wasn't painted it's original color.  :-\  Similar to tan tops ride.

Yeah, he had it up for $38k at one time. So what does everyone think of it as far as color, etc? Is the car hot or not?  I was looking in a mopar magazine today and saw an ad for the 6 pumper set up like it has and the price was over $2300 just for the parts. I set up the appointment for the inspection so should know something soon.

Great advice... You can never be too safe.. Or you could end up like me and see the thing and decide you want it, immediately... Take someone with a level head and look the car over very carefully. Some of these "freshly restored" cars can be a nightmare.. Trust me, I bought one.

The car actually was redone over 4 years ago. I view this as a good thing because there is a better chance of something coming back to the surface if it wasn't done correctly. Freshly redone cars always scare me.

That's a good point. Sometimes you succomb to love at first sight and start ignoring obvious problems. That's when it's good to have someone with you who's not emotionally involved and can bring you back down to earth if necessary.
