I took my drive shaft into a shop for new u-joints and balancing.  (sounds like the beginning of a bad joke, doesn't it?)  Anyway, the guy tells me that he can't get joints any more for the end of the shaft with the inertia ring.  That doesn't seem right to me.  What do you guys think?

find a new shop....the inertia ring has nothing to do with the u joint.

Both the 7260 and 7290 (as well as a 7260/7290 combo) are still available new the last time I was looking. Is the "inertia ring" on the end with the slip yoke or with the pinion? Check out rockauto.com or something and get a part number for him maybe?

I got some new U joints at Napa a couple weeks ago.

Absolutely correct!  It's one thing to say you aren't sure about something that old but to not even look it up and just make up a stupid excuse (that is wrong) just screams of people who shouldn't be doing the work you wanted them to do.  They are supposed to be specialists not part time kids behind the counter after school at Autozone.

even the guys at autozone can handle looking up the u-joints. thats one thing they havnt screwed up yet...lol

Thanks, guys.

My bad, turns out that I misunderstood the guy at the shop.

What is not available is the whole end of the shaft (tranny end), which has the inertia ring and the round bored housings that hold the ujoint.  He was looking at the condition of the bored areas that hold the cylinders of the joint, and was considering the possibilty of the joint cylinders not seating securely in the bores. In that event, he wouldn't be able to replace the end of the shaft because he couldn't get the replacement end.  Makes sense after he explained it to me s l o w e r.

He also mentioned that he could replace the tranny end of the shaft to look like the back end, but I told him to not do anything if that is the case.  If he's going to modify the shaft like that, I might as well pick up a new modern shaft and joints.  I'm trying to stick to as many orginal parts as possible.
