Hey Guys,

I am trying to pull the motor out of a 73 charger what would be the best way to pull it?

Thanks,

lisiecki1

i found it easier to pull mine with the trans attached.....make sure all grounds and other electrical wires/cables are disconnected, unbolt exhaust, remove starter if it's in the way, drain coolant/remove radiator, put jack under trans, unbolt crossmember, connect cherry picker (engine hoist....with load leveler), lift motor slightly, remove long motor mount to frame bolts, lift engine until mounts clear k frame while lowering trans, then jack up high enough to clear the radiator support.
Remember the average response time to a 911 call is over 4 minutes.

Did the same as lisiecki1 but I also let the air out of the front tires for just a little more clearance. Make sure the attachment from the hoist to the engine is nice and secure, I warned my neighbors that if they heard a scream it was just me dropping my engine. I was able to do mine by myself.

I have a hoist on wheels made for european cars so I had to make the arm longer to be able to lift a engine from a US car.
This ofcourse weakens the design so I'm scared like h**l everytime I lift an engine.

I didn't know if it was possible/easier to drop it from the bottom and remove the member.

it's possible, but it involves removing the front suspension (including torsion bars) and access to a hydraulic car lift to lift the entire car high enough to clear the motor.....definately not easier...

In a 73, I'd say its definately easier to pull out from the top, I've pulled one out of a 72 and 73, nothing to it. In the 72 I left the trans in place, because I didnt need to remove it, In the 73 I had to replace the clutch so I dropped the tranny first from the bottom, then decided to pull the engine, to go ahead and clean / paint it.
