Well, there may or may not be at least one person on this very forum who has in his posession the correct stamping machine and knowledge to correctly reproduce fender tags.  If there was such a person I'm comfortable stating that he would never make a fake one for anybody under any circumstances.  If it were true.
My point is that it is very very possible to do.  I'm not so sure that one on e-bay is a fake or that it isn't either.  My personal opinion at this point is to give him the benefit of the doubt and say that he did indeed have a 69 Charger with a Hemi in it from which he sold many parts.  This fender tag is all thats left and that fender tag may indeed have also come off of that same car.  I'm not accusing anyone of anything yet.  I need more evidence to pass my personal imperious judgement on the whole matter.  It could be fake, it could be a typo, it could be a legit example of the mythical 69 Hemi XP car.

Why does the "J" look darker than the other codes? :scratchchin:

I don't know if I'd be so sure it was a typo on the tag without seeing the rest of the tag. I was thinking that when me and Gene were going through some paperwork there was a chance that you could order a 69 Charger with the HEMI without getting the R/T option. I don't recall how it was all laid out, but I was thinking it was a possibility. Where is Geno to help me out.

I got paperwork here from Chrysler that says it wasn't available. There is a chance one or two slipped out though....

We really need to see all the tag don't we?  :eyes:

Could it have been an employee ordered (and purchased at the factory) Charger? In other words, not an executive order (they would want an RT), and not a dealer order, but an employee purchase?

Might that explain such an exception?  :popcrn:

Chris, your question got posted on the auction:

Q: Greg, any chance you can send over a full pic of this tag for registry purposes? Chris admin@1969chargerregistry.com www.1969chargerregistry.com
A: After the auction is over I will do that. Send me a email to remind me with your e-mail address in it.

There's no way I would bid on that tag unless I was able to see the whole thing. Especially at the price it's currently going for.

Sorry for the delay in chiming in on this thread, guys - was travelling to Bolivar, MO to drop my daughter off at college yesterday...

As for this fender tag, there isn't a really good way to prove or disprove its authenticity from what we see here.  There is one thing that might (and I underscore MIGHT) shed some light on things.

See if the seller will tell us if the tag has a tailstripe code (V8?).  All the R/T's would have been coded for a tailstripe or the V88 delete code, but a true XP car probably didn't get a V8_ code.  That's about the only way I could see to tell, just from the fender tag codes, whether this is an XP Hemicar or an XS with a typo on the fender tag.

Having the VIN tag would help a bit, but most naysayers (honestly not picking on you, Ghoste) probably won't join the XP Hemi bandwagon unless a broadcast sheet surfaced as well.  Even then, I'm guessing the codes will read just like a similarly-equipped R/T would - with the possible exception of the tailstripe and price class "P".

Does make ya think though, duddnit?

:scratchchin:

P.S.  There are multiple factory documents which reference the possible existence of a base-model '69 HemiCharger, and others which state it was possible to order base model Coronets, Satellites, Belvederes, etc. in just the same fashion.  This same paperwork also says it was possible to order a 1969 4-door B-body with a Hemi, but not a station wagon.  About the only Hemi B-body model limitations they had were:  Station Wagon, Police and Taxi versions.  Pretty much everything else was fair game - which doesn't mean they were actually produced however...

Ghoste

I'm less a naysayer than a skeptic on the fence.  ;)

(my mind's wide open Luther)

doesn't that bronze HEMI J car have a '68 dash,..
so,.. couldn't it be a pre-production example maybe one of the first '69s or handbuilt for the photo shoot, then crushed as they wouldn't want it "on the books"?..
sorry i'm too lazy to go dig up and re-read that old thread..

What makes no sense to me is why would someone order a Hemi and jump through all the hoops and red tape to get one in a car that was not an R/T? Why not just make it an R/T and spare yourself the hassle?

I know of a '69 Charger R/T where the Vin on the dash is XP29L9.... and the VIN on the fender tag is XS29L9.... and the serial number matches up. Sometimes the factory just made a mistake.

hemigeno

Yep, and it would be unusual (but not impossible) for the same mistake to be carried through to multiple places.  That's why seeing the dash VIN and/or broadcast sheet would be better for the sake of this discussion.

:o  Who would thunk that?
This car was sold many years ago to somebody in Wisconsin. I now am retired and living in Florida.

If that's the case with this tag then I don't see how someone would be too successful in using it to fake a car and pass it off as a one-of-a-kind Hemi. On the flipside I can't see someone spending upwards of $230 for something that only amounts to a collectible fender tag. Any opinions on whether the potential buyer is going to try using this tag for a phony cloney?

Chris G.

I'm sure that the original VIN tag is lurking around somewhere. The car was parted out but the VIN tag was destroyed??? Highly doubtful.

Mopargreg always has some interesting stuff. I wish he would reveal the tag to the public, but...well...whatever.

It would be surprising if he sends Chris the full tag pic after the auction, but never say never. If Greg is reading this, then I say Greg Rocks and always comes through!!!  :2thumbs:

Watch the auction price jump big time on the last day.

69*F5*SE

The friggin' thing is up to $406.00.  What's the purpose of having it if it isn't for your car?  Am I missing something?   Maybe I'm too honest/dumb.  :shruggy:  Ted

Ghoste

If you could prove it's legit and build a car around it, it would be worth an enormous pile of money.

Yes...but IMHO....you still need to have a legit VIN tag to go with it???
