Here’s some good information that I found looking for Camshaft information, I’ve been told pretty much a similar explanation by an Mopar engine builder.

The links to the pages are at the bottom of the page, these three pages are the pages that break down all the information about what the camshaft does when it’s doing it’s intended purpose in the engine, it’s not the golden rule of cams, but just take from it the information that you don’t know and relate it to what you do know already and it clears up some of the information that camshaft designers don’t have time to talk to you about over the phone.

If you know of some other good references for good information out on the web post it!, most people I know don’t buy too many books with information about automotive related facts unless they need to do the work there selves because it’s easier just to ask someone else about the information you need to know and go for it yourself, if you feel that you have enough know how and tools to do the job.

Here’s a good article with good information about a cam designer and a head designer that joined together and formed a company: http://www.circletrack.com/techarticles/139_0402_cams_custom/index.html
