I wanted ask everyone their opinion on my trans?   Just recently it has had a little problem getting into third. IT will shift good up until it wants to go into third. IT wont until i give it more gas and get my rpms up to about 3000 to 3100.

Since its hard to identify, i haven't really found much on the site and internet and was hoping the experts on here could help?               :shruggy:             With transmissions I'm lost!   :brickwall:

Car is a 69 charger 318/904/ 8.75

never rebuilt to my knowledge and the engine was replaced in the 90s, has under 100k mileage

trans received a full service before i drove it on the road .

i've never had this problem.....but I would start with checking all the adjustments on the trans and if all is well there I would drain the fluid, drop the pan, and have a look at the valve body.

Remember the average response time to a 911 call is over 4 minutes.

The average response time of a 357 magnum is 1400 FPS.

I have the same problem with mine.
I put a Transgo shift kit in and when starting out it shifts out of first late and then I have to give it about 5000 rpm before it will shift into 3rd.
Once it shifts then it works fine.
I think its one of two things. Bad governor or most likely a sticky 2-3 shift valve.
I'm just waiting to get some time to pull the valve body and check it.

First, has the transmission always shifted late into 3rd or did the problem just start? Stock linkage and carb?

With any late/early shifting problem the first place to look is the throttle pressure (kickdown) linkage, if the car has an aftermarket carb without the proper throttle lever adapter the linkage can't be correctly adjusted.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

im not currently running a kickdown on the 904, but it seems as though my 2nd is slipping as well

what adjustments can be done to the shifter and or throttle pressure linkage

lisiecki1

it is my understanding that unless the valve body is set up for no kickdown, the transmission can be ruined by not having it.

lisiecki1 I was typing the same thing about needing a kickdown linkage when you posted.

But,the correct terminology is "Throttle Pressure " linkage, and unless you have a manual shift valve body you must have it.That is unless you want to destroy the clutches.

looks like I blew up my first 904, anybody know of one for sale in NJ ?

I would not give up on the trans yet. If the fluid level is correct and the fluid is not burnt.

Install and adjust the throttle pressure linkage first. You can adjust the 2nd gear band with the trans. in the car.

IMO driving a 318 car without throttle preassure for a while , depending of course on how hard you drive it, will not blowup the trans.

With out  throttle preassure the transmission shifts early and very softly , sometimes reving up on the 2-3 shift.

Probably causes faster clutch and band wear and slipping.  :Twocents:

i think the low reverse band has to be adjusted
