So I'm having a blast trying to figure out what going on with my 69 charger. At first my car was not charging so I removed the alternator and put on a new one which was a two field alt but made it work by grounding out one of the fields. Still nothing, no charge. So I replaced the new electronic voltage regulator with a very old one that we had kicking around and at least it was charging now, but would peg out when driving around. So I just took off the old rusty one and put another regulator on it, but I think it's a point style regulator, does that matter and will it still work. I thought I read it would still work ok with a electronic set up? Now with the new style points regulator it's not pegging it's self out but it's bouncing around like crazy between the half way mark on my alt gauge and 3/4 the way up. I forgot my amp meter gauge at home so I can't check the voltage at the battery while it's running. This morning with the old rusty one I had on it, it was reading over 15volts.

Yes...it does matter.  You need the electronic version if you are running electronic ignition.
