Horn problem

So on my 68 Charger if you hook up the horn and turn the steering wheel, the horn goes off about three quarters of a turn clock wise. I've had it apart several times and can't really figure out what's causing it. If you take the wheel off, on the back of the steering wheel is a thick wire clip or something that ends with a little arm sticking out. I'm wondering if this piece is somehow grounding when it get around to the horn spring wheel, or whatever that little piece to the right is called that has the little wheel on top of the spring. Anyone else run into this problem? Help, I need a horn for all the idiots that love to pull out in front of my car. Also, the first time I had it apart there was a coiled piece of insulated wire that was wrapped around the shaft. I don't know if this was put into to try and stop this condition or what, but it doesn't matter if that is in or out, the horn still goes off on it's own.

If you happen to have the 3 spoke steering wheel
remove horn cap.Unhook black wire from horn contact an touch to ground .And test horn action.

Assuming the relay is good well mounted and wiring hooked up correctly as.Alt feeds power to horn relay .Green wires to horns .And black w wire from relay to steering column.I think its a black w White tracer wire triggering the horn .What if you unplug the turn signal harness connector from column .And touch a testwire to the black and touch ground quick and see if horn blows. And if horn works correctly .Then you problem is most likely in the column and or horn contacts .

Well, I'm not sure what I did, but it apparently fixed itself. This last time that I had it apart and seeing where something might be grounding, I put the wheel back on and started turning it to see if that metal spring part was hitting something. Horn didn't sound off. Hmmm, put nut back on, three spoke horn piece, hooked up the black wire, and turned the wheel again....nothing. So far so good. Started backing out of the driveway and onto the street, first time it didn't sound off doing that. Took it down the street to get gas, drove around for 10 minutes with lots of turns and it still stayed quite unless I operated it. Hopefully whatever was causing it won't rear its ugly head again.  :icon_smile_big:

I will when you are behind a cop at a red light....  :nana:

I had some probs with the wire itself under the wheel for the horn and it caused the something similar,  make sure you look over the wire and look for insulation's breach's that might ground.

Well, I need to recheck it. It's been fine for the most part, but today on the way to work, it honked for a split second when I was making a left turn. But it only did it once. Grrrrr

Make sure the wires running through the column arent chaffed or pinched.I had a wire problem. I found that had a screw going through it where wires rest in the metal guard

That's all been checked. When it first started doing it, I took the wires completely out of the column to inspect the harness. I did have to heat shrink over one spot, but that was it.

I had that same left turn honk issue back in the '70's when I got our 66 charger...problem was a grove was worn in the brass circle under the steering wheel.....making the roller for the horn momentarily touch the steering shaft...

At first I thought you nailed it because I thought you were saying that you had a flat spot on the roller, but you said the piece behind the steering wheel. I do have a flat spot on the roller. Could this be the cause and how so?

The horn only going to sound when its grounded and completing the circuit for the horn relay .Either by pushing horn button .Or by wire or contact coming in contact with a ground source other than horn button

or the little roller under the steering wheel moving around and touching the shaft...i had a large groove that was cut into the brass ring under the steering wheel...it wore so bad that it moved the roller all over the place
