the 727s-did they make them for small block AND big block?

Stupid question time-

two types of 727s right? I've seen cars that have 318/340/360 engines and have the 727. and of course, big block...

why did some cars back in the day have the 904 OR the 727? is one better than the other?

and what are the differences between a small block and big block 727? I don't mean in that "well one is for big blocks and the other is for small blocks, duh" but technical/visual differences.

SB's had the option of a 904 or 727 based upon their performance and application, all BB's had a 727.

differences between a SB and a BB 727 are the bellhousing only.  the SB bellhousing top two holes are wider apart and the trans inspection cover is different from a BB housing (requiring different bolt hole offsets).

yes, but that is only between the 904 and 727... there are different tailshaft housings out there (i.e. 4x4, RV/Motorhome, and regular) but they apply to 904's and 727's alike (except the RV/Motorhome 727 only).

but 727's themselves had 2 different tailshafts also, just putting the info out there incase he gets a used tranny and wonders why the driveshaft isn't fitting

alot more differences than that unfortunately. such as bellhousing size, bolt patterns, length, front case diameters, and pan shape just to name a few that deal directly with exterior based identifiers.

The model designations aren't based on any volume, they are simple engineering model designations. The 904 was originally called the Torqueflite 6 and the 727 was the Torqueflite 8. These designations were changed in '64 when the 904 was adapted for use in the new 273 V8 and was no longer a 6 cylinder only unit.
