Yeah - Charlie's car that "started having trouble" won the race...

IIRC, Charlie said he had his choice between the #88 and the #99 car, and that the #88 car was hands-down a better/faster car.  Guess the #99 car "started having trouble" keeping up with the #88.

Wonder how the race would have turned out if the Ford guys had stuck around.  It's distinctly possible that the Daytona's debut could have turned out much differently.

The Fords are still there - They have not crossed the finish line yet.  :o :D

The #88 was so much better developed than any of the other Daytonas present that weekend.    Baker and Glotzbach had been working with the car all summer, and all the other wing cars had essentially zero laps in their own cars before practice started.    The 88 was there as an example for the other Chrysler teams to look at.   It was not really supposed to qualify, and definitely not race as Chrysler did not want to compete against their own teams.   Larry Rathgeb has said that his boss almost had his head when Charlie put it on the pole.  Of course, if you've ever followed Charlie down the interstate towing a trailer at 90, you know he only knows how to go one way, which is flat out.

Just ran across this - was posted prior to me joining.

The teams were all given the preferred set up. They could choose to run whatever...   :Twocents:

I've never owned anything but a MoPar. Can you say that?
