I have 4 15x7 wheels and I am getting ready to buy tires... I see by searching that the most popular combo is 275-60x15 on the back and 245-60x15 on the front.  I like the looks but can I do this combo with my wheels and if not what is the biggest I should go in the rear?

Thanks

Mark

Mark, the 245's have a tread width of 9.65 inches, so they MAY fit fine, but you'd have to see the manufacturers recommendations. The 275's will have a tread width around 10.82 inches and I'm not sure I'd risk it. Also, remember that section width is wider than tread width and sometimes by quite a bit. As with any wheel and tire combo, it's best to check the manufacturers recommendations.

Im running 255/60/15 on 15x7 rims on all 4 corners with no rubbing.

The 275 tire on a 15x7 rim looks a bit "balloonie" to me....a 15x8 would be a better choice as well as a safer choice

It gives a very stock looking appearance and looks right at home on a stock Charger. IMO if you want the car to have some attitude and it's NOT a stock restoration, big out back and little up front look just right. You have more options than just the 3 sizes mentioned here. BFGoodrich has a size/fitment chart for every tire they sell. It says what size rim it will fit, how wide the cross section will be on a certain rim size, gives tread width, etc... ALSO, the stock wheels you have can be widened anywhere from 8" to 10" wide and will still fit the Charger. Stockton Wheel and Wheel Vintiques both do this. In fact, they both sell already-widened wheels and will take yours as cores. I plan on having my rear wheels widened to 9". If you want to stick with 15 X 7 wheels, you can still go big and little...maybe consider 245/60/15 in front and 255/60/15 on the back. BTW: an 8" wheel opens up a TON more options. Just curious, are these stock wheels you're talking about?

Well sort of stock... they are original 15x7 mopar steel wheels...

That's a nice looking tire combo, but know that most all 275 tires come with a minimum rec mounting wheel width wider than 7 inches. Following the rec width makes sure the tire tread and sidewall function right and don't get over-stressed. That being said, a million people have mounted tires on impropperly sized wheels and gotten away with it.

So everyone talks like they are running a 60 series tire ... but what about 70 series tires?  For instance, I see that a 255-70x15 is 2 inches taller than a 255-60x15 and both mount to a 7" rim ok.  So could you run a 70 in back and 60 in front to get the height differences and then have tires that are the same width but the back one a little taller?

What are you guys' thoughts on this?

I really don't know alot about tires  :(

Haueter66, the tire 255/70 is 29.06” tall, it’s as tall as my tires on my charger 29.5” and it would look like kind of like this but not as wide, if you get a rim with the right backspacing.

I think it would work well as far as tire runout and you know a tall tire is just as important as the wide one,   I would go for it if you can get the correct backspacing on a 7" rim for clearance.

If the tire width is similar to 255-60x15 where will I have to worry about clearance with backspacing?

phat69charger

I'm not talking about the rear spacing I'm talking about the outer lip, if you have a wide tire you should get it as close to the outer lip as you could, to me if you have wide and tall tire's having them in away from the outer lip doesn't look as good as it would close to it.

For the 275s out back, 15x8 is way better. The 245 up front is perfect on a 15x7.

There was a thread in the old forum that was in the Tech archives with pictures and tips on how to figure your backspacing and all.... that was really informative. If anybody happened to copy it, now would be a great time to post it.
