Hedman Headers

Since my 440 didn't have any exhaust manifolds on it I decided to purchase a set of headers. After reading the older posts here in this forum I ordered a set of Hedmans, 78076 with ceramic coatings.  When I came home from work today there sat the box on the porch. It was not a job I was looking forward to.  I got the drivers side mounted this evening, it took less than 30 minutes. I did remove the spark plugs and left motor mount bolt to give the engine a little wiggle room, and it dropped down from above. Cleared the starter with room to spare  as well as the power steering . Spark plugs went back in easily. All of the supplied bolts worked well too.  I'm very happy with the fit and ease of installation so far. I  believe the right side should be a tad easier than the left side.

Be careful with headers. You might need better/longer bolts to keep antifreeze from commings out, and you should use a mini-starter, to keep it from getting too hot. Headers eat full size starters, period.

good stuff :yesnod: ...you probably know this but ,  don't forget the hose clamp on the powersteer fluid return line  :yesnod:

The bolts that came with the headers were the same length as the studs I removed, and I used a sealer so I'm hoping they will be ok. I did install a mini starter on this engine a while back, you can just make out a tiny bit of it in the picture. Yes, I need to add clamps to the return line, heater hoses and radiator hoses. I haven't got everything bolted- clamped - strapped in place yet so I'm kinda test fitting things as I go along.
I did install the passenger side header yesterday, I removed the motor mount bolt, rocked the engine up about 1/2" and it fell down in position.  :2thumbs:

wow that went on good , some headers can be a right nightmare :icon_smile_blackeye:

I got them from Summit- $470 plus around $15 shipping. I had read many horror stories of fitting headers but I was very happy with the way these fit.

Never heard that one before :rotz:
But then again, cars differ quite a bit from one style to the next, so you never know really...

terrible one

+1 for Hedmans.

I got the $190 version full lengths from Summit and they went in just fine, although I did have to beat a bit to clear the mini starter I used. I used studs too.

i have the heddman's on my car. with the automatic they went right in from the bottom, the passenger took all of 15 minutes to install. the drivers side took a little longer due to installing the starter with the header partially installed. (i run a stock starter) if you have a mini-starter the starter can be installed after the header is bolted in place. either way, they went in with no issues or clearance problems.......\

fast forward to recently when i installed the 4 speed- not the same result..... the part number matches for fitting 4 speed cars however i had clearance problems. they physicly didnt fit around my bellhousing. (i have the 11 inch clutch) i had to clearance the lower tubes a pretty good bit to get them to not bind on the bellhousing and since the bellhousing is wider then the auto the starter sits out farther as well. that said the starter was pinched really bad on the vertical tubes from the header so that had to be flattened out but only a small amount.  even with the problems i ran into installing the 4 speed the headers only required minor clearancing. i mocked them up and marked them one time and just had to flatten the ube in a few places- just enough to take the roundness out of the tube. i did not have to beat them sensless like i have heard horror stories about in some cars.

for the money they are not bad headers, i cant really complain. oh, also, mine are the 1 3/4 not the 1 7/8. when i ever get around to changin heads i am going to bigger tubes

Need to correct myself- Hooker, not Hedman on my car- might have made a difference?

SeattleCharger

Why would you want anything else?  Just give me a Charger and I'll be happy.

c00nhunterjoe

what year charger do you have? i have not heard of removing the bars for headers. especially not hookers. but each manufacture is different. i have installed hookers on b body's before with no difference then the method of installing the heddman's.

terrible one

I agree. If they won't clear the t-bar for install how will they clear once they're on?

i'd stay away from hooker comps if i were you. my car came with them and i'm not happy with the fit they hit my steering box and  the shaft that go's into the steering box and is extremely close to the starter it actually gives me starting troubles when the engines hot and it's a mini starter. also the mounting holes on the flanges didn't line up exactly they had to be slotted out to match the holes on the engine.
