Visiting America next spring, tips on what to do?

We are coming over next spring for about 3-4 weeks. (There are 4 of us)  We start in New York, then drive down to Florida and through Alabama,Mississippi, (maybe Tennessee) Texas +++ all the way up to Seattle. We will be there at the 4th of July. We are thinking about staying in Florida that day or should we be somewhere else?

What should we drop a visit along the way on a our trip?

This is going to be the best trip EVER!!!!!!

We`re from Norway (Europe).Have visited LA,LAS VEGAS,SAN FRAN AND AUSTIN before but that's it.

We would also like to see the cowboys in the south (like the good old days) +++

if you want to see some Cowboy, good ol' days stuff.. i would reccommend seeing "Tombstone"  in Tombstone, AZ...  in july it will be about 120degrees F, but if you don't mind the southwest desert heat...  they put on a pretty good ol' west shoot em up show.  I was stationed in Yuma for a while and my wife and i would drive out there to go see the show. Just to drive out there you really have to appreciate the old west kinda lifestyle... otherwise..  there isn't a whole lot to see out there.  In Tuscon, AZ there is also an Old Western style Film studio!

What about Texas or Tennessee? A friend of mine said that people do live like the old days there NOW or is that wrong?

Route 66 is a good trip. It goes from Chicago to the west coast. It takes you through the southwest which is a great trip for sight seeing. It would be hot but most of the U.S is pretty warm this time of year. this has been one of the cooler summers ever so far here in the midwest. It has been in the 50's in the evenings through out the midwest the last couple weeks.......unbelievably nice. The problem with visiting the US is the geographic size of the place.  You practically have to take two or three plane flights while you are over here just to see more than one region of it.  




These guys are right; the classic Cowboy America is in the southwest.  If you've seen the original 1971 "Vanishing Point" movie, well, that's a drive through western Colorado, Utah, and Nevada.  


Tombstone (in Arizona) feels like "the real thing."  It is a tiny little isolated town, but it was the site of some well known history.  The little town has stayed in existence these days as a tourist spot directly because of that history.



Monument Valley (northeastern Arizona) is one specific location that was used in many old cowboy & western type movies.  It's a very memorable place to see because it still looks like this today:

Enjoyed LA,SAN FRAN and NEW YORK even though they are not all cowboy.

We made a stop in the middle of the dessert (no the way to Vegas) at a place called CALICO.
That was very cool to watch.

I love everything about America. Its the best country to visit for a holiday. Would like to move someday but we`ll see.

What are you driving? Coming down from NY you could hit Skyline Drive in Va. it's beautiful. If going to Fla. are you going all the way down to the Key's? Daytona Beach is fun and NASA Space port is cool, Airboat rides in the Everglades are a blast, you could work all that in on your way down.

If you want to know what kind of vehicle, its either a Chevrolet Trailblazer or Dodge Durango. We don't know yet how far down we will go but I guess pretty far down. Daytona beach would be awsome.

You have mapped out allot of miles, down the east coast and over to the west is 4-5000 miles of roadtrip!(that's why I wondered what you were going to use) Some day I hope to do many miles on my 70 the same way! Good Luck and God speed you on your way!

What route are you taking to get to Seattle? I can reccommend some attractions in the NW depending on your travel route. It depends on if you go through the lower part like Nevada/Utah region or up north through the Wyoming/Montana region. If you've already seen Nevada you might want to go north this time and see stuff like Yellowstone/Grand Tetons or Mt. Rushmore and the Black Hills. There's a lot of good cowboy and indian history all through Colorado, N. and S. Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, etc.

How old are you?

I ask, because people in their late teens thru the late twenties have a different idea of fun than people over 30, IMO.  Are you looking to travel and party, or are you looking for landmarks and history?

IMO, you should hit DC for a day or two - probably could check out Williamsburg VA and Busch Gardens (amusement park) while you're at it.  As mentioned, you'll want to check out The Kennedy Space Ceneter and the Everglades.  On your way to Texas, hit New Orleans and check out the scene as well as the aftermath of hurricane Katrina.  Hit the Grand Canyon.  On your way of to Washington state, hit Yellowstone or Yosemite National parks.  In Washington, check out MT. St Helens and learn the history of that if you've never heard of it. 

Oh - bring a lot of $, lol.

Well, if you go from Florida through Allabama and Mississippi, you can head east on 10 and go through what is left of New Orleans after Katrina    , Then head north through louisiana and catch I-20 through East Texas. I have a house down there in Tyler and if I were there it could be a place for you to spend the night, But right now I'm 1200 miles away.  Tyler is the Rose Capitol of the world. You used to be able to buy a dozen roses for $3.50 when I was married. No idea how much they are now.

Anyway, Then head through Dallas and head up towards Amarillo and check out Cadillac Ranch just west of town on I-40. 40 runs right near the old Route 66.  You can take that on through Albuquerque which although it's pretty cool Scenery, It is a shithole to be stuck in while waiting for a load when you are driving truck.   But there is some really good mexican food to be had there.  From there you could head north through the mountains, and go through Colorado and head to Seattle that way, Or you can go on through Arizona, Nevada and that way.  

Either way you go it's a nice drive.

I can tell you for sure if you go that way do not stop in or around Abilene TX. it was terrible when I was there in the USAF!!! (Just keep going)
