What are the 3 wires for on the reverse harness. I am trying to figure out why my reverse lights don't work.

The center wire on the connector (brown) is the Neutral Safety part of the switch, the two outer wires (usually black & violet) are for the backup lights. Jumpering across the two outer wires when the ignition switch is on should bring the lights on.

this is diagram with  bulkhead plug and wires colors on 3rd gens...
